LesBBQ
Food Review
I hit up Les joint yesterday when I was in the area. Below are pictures of what I ordered and receipt.
I ordered the 3 meat combo that comes with 2 sides. There also is a 1 and 2 meat combo. Sandwich’s, Burgers, Full Racks of Ribs are also offered.
The meat choices are:
• Chicken (Breast)
• Pulled Pork
• Spares Ribs
• Brisket
• Oxtail Beef Sausage
• Famous Oxtails
The sides offered are:
• BBQ Baked Beans
• Dirty Rice
• Mac/Cheese
• Potato Salad (Baked Potato)
I wanted to try a sample of everything, but limited cuz I have a mini fridge in my semi and it was already full of food for the road.
Looking at the below picture and starting clockwise from top left. They gave me 3 containers of Les own BBQ sauce. Next is the Dirty Rice then Mac/Cheese.
Below on right is the brisket. I was surprised on the amount. Places in the past would give me 3 pieces with them being half pieces to stiff you. This meal had 6 full pieces stuffed in the container.
To the left is Oxtails. I was first expecting those big Fuckers he shows in the videos, but those things would barely fit. You could get 2 of them in this container and nothing else. They gave me 3 small, but thick Oxtails.
Above the Oxtails is one Chicken breast.
The picture does not show it, but it is a lot of food. There is enough for two people. I knew immediately I wasn’t gonna finish this in one sitting.
The first thing I tried was the Oxtail. I tried the meats without using Les’ BBQ sauce first. I picked it up and it stayed together. I bit into it and immediately tasted the smoke flavor followed by the seasoning. It was soft/tender. I was highly impressed with it.
Next, I tried the brisket. I picked it up and it stayed together. No pink on none of the slices. I pulled it apart and the pieces stayed together. I bit into it and again immediately hit with that smoke flavor then seasoning. It was juicy and tender. The fat on it was juicy/tender and full of flavor. I have had brisket in the past where the fat was like chewing on gum.
Then came the Chicken breast. Here I was disappointed. I went into it expecting it too be tender/juicy and it was somewhat dry. I had to put some effort in cutting it with the plastic fork/knife they give you. It was easy to chew and it also was flavorful with the smoke/seasoning.
Next came the Dirty Rice. When it hit my tongue, I got an immediate taste of spice/seasoning in my mouth. It was flavorful and I immediately went in for more. You can taste the Oxtail bits in it too. And then came the Mac/Cheese. It too was flavorful and the seasoning hit you quickly. Lots of BBQ places are hit/miss with their Mac/Cheese, Les got a high quality version and I was impressed.
The bread was buttered, soft and fresh. Other places I been too, they put the bread on the bottom for takeout. I get home and it’s saturated with grease and I usually toss it. Les, they put it on top of everything. The bread was buttered and soft. I then repeated tasting the meats this time with his BBQ sauce. The sauce is spicy/tangy and enhances the flavors of the meats. It did enhance the Chicken.
I ate about half of that order last night and was stuffed. I finished the rest tonight and everything tasted better being it was “leftovers”.

The Experience
When walking towards the restaurant, I immediately saw there were no big smokers in the back like you see in the videos. The building is small so no way all those industrial size cooking stuff is gonna fit in there that you see in the videos. So it was immediately obvious the cooking is done offsite and brought in.
There is a small drive-thru on the side.
When I stepped inside. I was immediately impressed with how clean and bright it is. There are large windows bringing in natural light. The floor is spotless to the point it looks like you can eat off it. The area behind the counter you can see everything where they prepare the meals. Nothing is out of view during preparation. There was an open doorway to the back and you can see some sitting at a desk. I suspect there are refrigerators back there and ovens to reheat the food.
I then immediately noticed the place was fully staffed with college age White Boyz who all look like high school age Skate Park kids. They were not wearing uniforms which immediately told me there is a high turnover rate with personnel. I then noticed one dude who looked Bi-Racial/Latino wearing a LesBBQ logo baseball cap. I had seen him in some of the videos. Watching him, it was clear he was the overall supervisor cuz he was standing and watching as the White Boyz prepared orders. Les knows you can’t leave White Boyz unsupervised cuz they will intentionally Fuck shit up. That cat was there to make sure that restaurant was operating fully under Les’ standards.
I suspect some White chicks work there on different days/times.
It was pretty clear Les knows he is in Mormon territory and knows how Mormons traditionally view Black folks. What was funny was looking at all the White Boyz facial expressions. They all had “Deer in the Headlights” expressions on their faces. Good chance they grew up with their brains pumped full that Black folks are inferior and they were shocked that this Black man was running a profitable and successful business in their territory. The customers were all White inside, White folks were coming in picking up call in orders and there were White folks in the parking lot in their cars stuffing their faces.
I had seen a vid with Les wife. She comes off as clear headed. Hopefully Les and her got shit locked down and we won’t see a repeat of “The Turkey Leg Hut”.
As you should already know, finding decent southern BBQ outside of the south is not an easy task. It’s always trial and error with places. Les place is holding up with southern BBQ. If you are in the SLC area for work or passing thru. I definitely recommend checking it out. You won’t be disappointed.
I give it a score of 8/10, could have been higher if it wasn’t for the Chicken.
Looking forward to returning and trying the items I did not get on this run.
The above 2 pictures are from the Net. I left my phone in truck getting charged.
