Let me just say this...*ahem*...most of these pics look like they were taken in WWI before the Nazis even existed. If that's the case then yes, there were blacks in the German WWI pre-Nazi army. But if these pics are during WW2 then it's likely these pics are from some other European army. I don't see any swatstikas on any of those guys. And as we all know Nazis wore swastikas. PLEASE PLEASE BGOL DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND RESEARCH THIS STUFF RATHER THAN POST THINGS WITHOUT PRIOR KNOWLEDGE!

My bad.. Either way.. Them crackers look scary.

Redsox should have fun with this one...

Interesting stuff in any case. Blacks were involved in every American war and fought on various sides. Some not too flattering. Let's not be in haste to judge however, as circumstances and education was different and strong co-orsion (spelled wrong i know) played a major part.

I can imagine that even if black weren't officially nazis, their might have been some that were sympathizers, albeit the nazi's would have still considered them inferior and maybe not worth fraternizing with.

No, there were no black Nazis.

The picture with the brother pouring him a drink is the US or British (looks more British) World War 1 uniform.

The picture of the African guy sitting in the car looking nervous is is not from the Nazi era.

First of all, the uniforms of the white guys are standard-issue World War 1 officer uniforms. They are German, but if you look at the insignia on the car itself, it has the Prussian Dragoons symbol. That symbol was used often on officers' vehicles during World War 1.

The Nazis did not come into power until 1933- some 15 years after World War 1. As a matter of fact, the German Workers party (which was renamed the National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazi) was not formed until after World War 1.

will someone 'pleaseeeeeee read their history. hitler preached a 'master race' philosophy where anyone but pure bred aryans were inferior. there is no way in hell that he was gonna have black soldiers fighting in his war to rid the world of 'mongrel' the fucking idiot came sooooooo close to winning world war two it aint funny. except for a few pivotal defeats and some dumb luck on the part of the allies hitler would have ruled the world...and there wouldnt have been any blacks in it!!!!!!!!!

Personally I think those photos are photoshopped. Poland didn't have colonies in Africa - unlike Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy (Lybia and Somalia) and Germany (parts of Uganda and Tanzania and what is now Namibia). I find it hard to believe that an African would have been on a military mission to Poland in the 1920s - he would have hadto have had permission from his colonial power.
\

from africa? anything's possible, but what is more likey is from...... haiti. what some folks do realize is that (as fucked up a country it is today) haiti was the first black country to achieve its independence. what few folk know is that it couldn't have been done without the help of the Polish. The French brought Polish mercenaries with them to put down the Haitian insurrection, but at some point the mercenaries switched side and fought against the French. from what i understand, there are still sections in Haiti today that have Polish street names and people of polish ancestry....

Wrong. There certainly were blacks that fought on the german side during the North African campaigne.

^^^^^ The Nazis were no fools. Like I stated earlier, Josef Mengele tried experiments to change eye color to turn "undesirables" into virtual Aryans. Here's a hypothetical:

You're a Black man living in Nazi Germany
You're the world's authority on Theoretical Nuclear Physics
The Nazis have to beat the Allies in a nuclear arms race.
Is it in their best interest to kill you based on the notion of inferiority of black people or the opposite, by using any means necessary to turn you into a "white" Aryan?

You know what? That's exactly what they tried with Jewish persons who happened to be scientists.

Uh. No. Hitler made the same exact fucking mistake Napoleon made. It was called Operation Barbarossa. A difference of two fuckin' days.

Napoleon: June 24, 1812
Hitler: June 22, 1941

Why start an successful invasion/conquest of Russia in the middle of summer when Fall and Winter are soon to follow? Is that dumb or what? What are those lines?

Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it?
History has a funny way of repeating itself?

Doesn't seem so smart to me.

There were in fact Black Nazis...a number of Black men served in the Lufwaffe as PILOTS...none were decorated but they are documented...

TheRhineland Bastards were children of French African soldiers that were stationed on Frances eastern border after WWI, and white German women...

The Rhineland Bastards were rounded up steriized, exterminated directly, or used for experimentation in the camps

There was a substantial Black population in pre Nazi Germany, Weimar Germany, due to colonial attempts in Ethiopia,North Africa, and German Southeast Africa

BLACKS DURING THE HOLOCAUST

The fate of black people from 1933 to 1945 in Nazi Germany and in German-occupied territories ranged from isolation to persecution, sterilization, medical experimentation, incarceration, brutality, and murder. However, there was no systematic program for their elimination as there was for Jews and other groups.

After World War I, the Allies stripped Germany of its African colonies. The German military stationed in Africa (Schutztruppen), as well as missionaries, colonial bureaucrats, and settlers, returned to Germany and took with them their racist attitudes. Separation of whites and blacks was mandated by the Reichstag (German parliament), which enacted a law against mixed marriages in the African colonies.

Following World War I and the Treaty of Versailles (1919), the victorious Allies occupied the Rhineland in western Germany. The use of French colonial troops, some of whom were black, in these occupation forces exacerbated anti-black racism in Germany. Racist propaganda against black soldiers depicted them as rapists of German women and carriers of venereal and other diseases. The children of black soldiers and German women were called “Rhineland Bastards.” The Nazis, at the time a small political movement, viewed them as a threat to the purity of the Germanic race. In Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler charged that “the Jews had brought the Negroes into the Rhineland with the clear aim of ruining the hated white race by the necessarily-resulting bastardization.”

African German mulatto children were marginalized in German society, isolated socially and economically, and not allowed to attend university. Racial discrimination prohibited them from seeking most jobs, including service in the military. With the Nazi rise to power they became a target of racial and population policy. By 1937, the Gestapo (German secret state police) had secretly rounded up and forcibly sterilized many of them. Some were subjected to medical experiments; others mysteriously “disappeared.”

The racist nature of Adolf Hitler's regime was disguised briefly during the Olympic Games in Berlin in August 1936, when Hitler allowed 18 African American athletes to compete for the U.S. team. However, permission to compete was granted by the International Olympic Committee and not by the host country.

Adult African Germans were also victims. Both before and after World War I, many Africans came to Germany as students, artisans, entertainers, former soldiers, or low-level colonial officials, such as tax collectors, who had worked for the imperial colonial government. Hilarius (Lari) Gilges, a dancer by profession, was murdered by the SS in 1933, probably because he was black. Gilges' German wife later received restitution from a postwar German government for his murder by the Nazis.

Some African Americans, caught in German-occupied Europe during World War II, also became victims of the Nazi regime. Many, like female jazz artist Valaida Snow, were imprisoned in Axis internment camps for alien nationals. The artist Josef Nassy, living in Belgium, was arrested as an enemy alien and held for seven months in the Beverloo transit camp in German-occupied Belgium. He was later transferred to Germany, where he spent the rest of the war in the Laufen internment camp and its subcamp, Tittmoning, both in Upper Bavaria.

European and American blacks were also interned in the Nazi concentration camp system. Lionel Romney, a sailor in the U.S. Merchant Marine, was imprisoned in the Mauthausen concentration camp. Jean Marcel Nicolas, a Haitian national, was incarcerated in the Buchenwald and Dora-Mittelbau concentration camps in Germany. Jean Voste, an African Belgian, was incarcerated in the Dachau concentration camp. Bayume Mohamed Hussein from Tanganyika (today Tanzania) died in the Sachsenhausen camp, near Berlin.

Black prisoners of war faced illegal incarceration and mistreatment at the hands of the Nazis, who did not uphold the regulations imposed by the Geneva Convention (international agreement on the conduct of war and the treatment of wounded and captured soldiers). Lieutenant Darwin Nichols, an African American pilot, was incarcerated in a Gestapo prison in Butzbach. Black soldiers of the American, French, and British armies were worked to death on construction projects or died as a result of mistreatment in concentration or prisoner-of-war camps. Others were never even incarcerated, but were instead immediately killed by the SS or Gestapo.

Some African American members of the U.S. Armed forces were liberators and witnesses to Nazi atrocities. The 761st Tank Battalion (an all-African American tank unit), attached to the 71st Infantry Division, U.S. Third Army, under the command of General George Patton, participated in the liberation of Gunskirchen, a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp, in May 1945.

Does anyone have any numbers of blacks that were living in Germany in the Nazi years? I linked Massaquoi because I want to get the book - yeah, I know, its been out six years. It's been that long.

Are we talking 20 people, 1,000 or 100,000? If so, what happened to them? I've always been interested to know what happened to black POWs. The French used Arab and African troops extensively. I know that from Max Hasting's Overlord the Germans feared the Senagalese because of their reputation from WW1. The British fell victim to racism, only using the Caribbean Regiment for guarding prisoner of war camps in North Africa. Blacks were integrated into individual units in the Canadian army. And we know that the overwhelming majority of blacks in the US Army were non-combatants (Although doing vital work with supply unitis like the famed Red Ball Express).

My question is, whaqt of Tuskegee Airmen who got shot down? Have any told their story?

By the way, the only US military unit that was integrated in WW2 was the Special Intelligence Service. That was the security unit for the Manhattan Project. They recruited black men with advanced science degrees to work as cleaners and gardeners. They were to report on people's activities. Apparently, the white security people were all immediately identified by the scientists. But no-one suspected the ni***r that was mopping the floor had a bachelors in physics and overheard you talking about your secret work and knew what you were talking about. I read a book as a teenager - 25 years ago - about it. I regret that I cannot remember it nor find it.

I remember reading an article back in the sixties about life in postwar Berlin. It was in one of the magazines my mom subscribed to.

The author said he was a factory worker during WWII, and never claimed to be a Nazi or a soldier. The article was about postwar Berlin and didn't really talk about the years before 1945. The author did say that he moved to Germany as a child. His father was white; his mother was black. They lived in German East Africa, and moved to Germany when Germany lost it's African colonies after WWI.

He didn't talk about the numbers of Blacks in Germany. He did say he wasn't the only one. He also said that there were not enough to cause segregation.

Again, this was a personal story, the kind you find in Reader's Digest and Ladies Home Journal. It was not a scholarly work.

The number of black people in Germany by the end of WWII was not very big, as most of them tried to leave the country. Maybe a few hundred stayed till the end, not more.

I did once read an interesting story about some black actors working for the DEFA-movie studios in Berlin. They survived the war and could live a rather normal life during wartime. They needed them as actors for movies (they made a lot of movies in the wartime to take the mind of people and soldiers off the war).

Even though Hitlers ideology was clearly racist, it was mostly focussed agains the jews. Black people (just like Asians, remember that Hitler was Allied with Japan) were never really on his agenda.

Damn, beat me to it. If Hilter managed to exterminate all the Jews in Nazi europe, black europeans were next. It's something that is rarely written about, but there it is. It explains why people act like Africans immigrating to Europe is a new thing, but there were blacks in Europe waaaaay before that. Hitler managed to kill most of them.
