So with the way this is setup MJF will wrestle at a later date whomever wins the Tournament to be the next AEW Champion. So MJF won't be the next AEW World Champion theoretically. In this case put the belt on Danielson. They have time to milk the whole MJF AEW/WWE bidding war storyline.

I think Moxley wins it and then Stokely and crew decimate him for MJF to cash the chip...

I think Tony Kahn relies too much on fan sentiment for his booking decisions. That's how Hangman became champion before he was ready.

Hangman was ready. You just didn't understand his character and the story that was being told.
Hangman's whole character was one of doubt and self destructive behavior. He lacked confidence which is why he would turn to drinking. He got kicked out of The Elite and was constantly told about how he would never amount anything. His self-esteem was at all time low. Around this time Dark Order was trying to recruit him into the group. He would turn them down but Dark Order remain persistent and supportive of him. THEY helped rebuild his self-esteem and got his confidence to a level to where he felt he could challenge Omega for the title.

He ultimately beats Omega at Full Gear and becomes Champ. Does he suddenly turn into Roman Reigns? No that's not his character. Even as the Champ he would have moments of doubt. It's an ongoing struggle that he would have. That's all consistent with his character. When he became champ people wanted him to suddenly walk around and strut like he's Moxley or Omega. I'm like no that's not his character.

This perceived notion that Hangman wasn't ready is misguided. Hangman was more than ready. Had a lot of banger matches in his title reign. He's probably had the best resume of people he's defeated as champ over Jericho's reign Moxley and Omega.

So in your opinion Mastermind, what went wrong?

Hangman comes off as soft in his promos. Nobody wants a world champion that has self doubt. Champions are supposed to be confident.
That whole storyline of him drinking came off like a Sweet Valley High novel or some shit. Saaawft as fuck. LOL
Dude came out wearing jeans with butterflies on them the other week. Like WTF.
His championship run was a flop. Just having good matches isn't good enough. You have to project yourself as a champion.

That's putting everybody in the same box. I don't like that. You should be able to have different type of characters as World Champ whether they project themselves with confidence or not. I always hated that one size fits all mentality.

Wrestling storylines aren't Shakespeare but the story was good enough to get the fanbase invested in Hangman which was the whole point. He was the top babyface at that point in time.

I couldn't care less about that. Darby Allin wears black skin tight leggings under cut off shorts. I don't give a damn because he delivers in the ring. It should be all about what you're doing in the ring.

As long as what you do is consistent with your character and you have good to great matches that's good enough.

I never got Hangman's appeal. The whole cowboy gimmick comes off as corny to me. I know he legit grew up in that lifestyle, but his drinking gimmick and low self-esteem shit makes me long for whiskey drinking and card playing Farooq and Bradshaw APA shit.

I understand the nuance of professional wrestling gimmicks however there are just some things that I cannot accept. If you are a hard drinking cowboy, you better be an ass kicking hard nosed mother fucker without self doubt or self-esteem issues.

That part of his gimmick never connected with me and his run was lukewarm. He could be a solid midcarder but no way should he have been given a run with the top title in AEW.

Man you're really out of the loop.

Dexter Lumis (serial killer/stalker gimmick who became a NXT fan favorite)

I didn't watch the KO match but I assume it was Johnny Gargano

Uso's younger brother and Roman's cousin.

I am out of the NXT loop. I haven't watched consistently since Samoa Joe was still there
And I got that the one guy was an Uso. I didn't know his name, but the second he took the hoodie off, I was like damn another Uce!
I'm just concerned with how many call-ups they're doing in a short amount of time. Just look at the AEW and the last week in wrestling.

Last weekend featured a 2 hour Smackdown, 1 hour Rampage, 3 hour WWE PPV, & a damn near 4 hour AEW PPV. And through all that the biggest story of the week has been the damn post-match press conference after the event. Not anything that exactly happened on screen. So much of the story in AEW takes place on the internet in-between the shows. And with all these call ups and guess appearances, I'm having to do homework after most WWE shows now to find out why I should care about these 'new' people.

Dude who was underneath the ring looked so much like a young 'Ring Master' Steve Austin that I thought that was Stone Cold's son or something

There's not many in NXT 2.0 worth calling up. Most of the established NXT guys were called up and let go during the pandemic. Carmello Hayes & Bron Breaker (Rex Steiner) are two of the few who are main roster ready. NXT 2.0 is more of a mix of development and goofy shit Vince liked but it's likely gonna go back into the black & gold NXT with top Indy guys.

So he hung around cornballs in the Young Bucks and Omega and was plagued by self doubt that turned him to drinking. And his drinking was so bad that he would even do it in the middle of matches and drink with his opponent in no holds barred matches. And then rejected people who wanted to be his friends and then he left for some time only to come back confident enough to finally confront Omega, the heel who was so dastardly that he faked blowing up a ring and once told his manager on national TV to "69 me Don"
And then as champ he had title matches including multiple "Texas Death Matches" that had little to no buildup to the match let alone the gimmick matches. And that strong title resume, the best title resume of AEW champs thus far, consisted of beating Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole who at that point had already lost to Orange Cassidy in his short time there, and those gimmick matches with Cole and Lance Archer.
One week he's trying to be a badass, the next he has butterflies on his jeans or he's rambling about how something like that final promo vs Punk.
And he's who they built up be the champion and top face of the company. A self doubting guy with drinking issues who continually is having a crisis of confidence without ever having of period of stepping up and being the fighting man of the people who overcomes the odds and makes people feel like anything is possible. And they probably wonder why people don't stick around and buy this shit beyond their hardcore audience that's been there since Day 1.

hold up is this random onlyfans chick acknowledging Roman...
