So what was the controversy (if there really was one) about him fighting to keep his name?
Seems to me if it's actual name, there shouldn't be any controversy unless he signed it away somehow when he went to the WWE.
WWE has tried to get talent to sign their names to the company, basically for trademark/marketing purposes. Some have been successful in keeping their names, others have done so and yet many end up changing their wrestling character name.
Wrestlers who wrestle under their government name and have made a name for themselves (so to speak) under that name prior to joining WWE have had better luck keeping their name.
Look at AJ Styles. He was AJ Styles in TNA and NJPW. He is AJ Styles in WWE.
He was a known commodity prior to joining WWE so he had a little latitude.
Most unknown wrestlers that sign to WWE have to go under name change so that WWE owns their brand.
Keith Lee didn't because he was a brand prior to signing up with WWE. So was Samoa Joe. AJ Styles and others.
What is unique with Lee is unlike most others, he uses his actual name.
When he leaves WWE, he can't go as "Keith Bearcat Lee, he'll be back to plain old Keith Lee.

I have a strong feeling that Bray Wyatt or whatever character he'll be going by will debut tonight on Dynamite. Tonight's show is supposed to be dedicated to Brodie Lee so with the Dark Order currently split who better to be their new leader and bring them all back into the fold.
Leave that shit in the past. Malls are pretty much dead now. I know they want to recreate a lot of 90s WCW, but this ain't it.

His non-compete expires Oct 29, which means the first event he could appear at is the Oct 29 Rampage, but that episode will be taped Oct 27 with Dynamite, and obviously that would be spoiled online.
So the earliest post non-compete would be the Nov 3 Dynamite, which would only give him two episodes of Dynamite and Rampage to build a feud for Full Gear. That would be way too rushed, compared to appearing tonight and having like six weeks or so to establish his character and direction, who he's targeting and why.
So Windham could be like "fuck that money, I'm tired of being on the shelf" or Tony might've offered him a bonus to cover what he left on the table, and I'm sure there's a loophole somewhere with non-competes anyway, so it's not far-fetched that he breaks the non-compete tonight.

They will need to rebrand with Bray Braun and Erick Rowe and a couple of defectors their female should be Abadon . Have the Dark Order faction split with one Face and the Other Heel. Sort of like the NWO and the WolfPack they will have their own program and should take over AEW"Dark" as the official show of the Dark Order

I kinda hope he doesn't. Don't want him with Dark Order and I don't really see where he'd fit in in AEW.
He and Braun seem better suited for Impact or NJPW to me.
I don't think Tony Khan will ever break up the "Dark Order". The too connected to Brodie Lee plus they're over with the fanbase. Doesn't look like we're getting Wyndham tonight. That would've been the segment for it.

SHIDA finally back on Dynamite and cutting promos! About fuckin' time. Also, we get Serena Deeb back on Dynamite. Should be a great match next week with those two.
Honestly, I could see him in Impact and NJPW but he belongs in WWE if he's allowed his freedom that we know he won't get. He got booked horrible at the end but there was nothing wrong with his characters.....I feel like in AEW he'd get buried. Too much top heavy talent. And he would probably stand on his own over there with that talent but then that would mean someone would get even less shine over there.
