I'mma roll with Avon, he was out again in Season 3, but only got locked up because Stringer tipped Bunny Colvin who tipped McNulty. And even then, he only had like 7 years to do. Then he got officers in jail bringin him chicken and shit. Marlo couldn't do that. Avon got the most respect.

I think Prop Joe should've been in the question, because the only reason he got killed was because he tried too hard to civilize Marlo to get him to chill out for the Co-Op and ended up telling Marlo everything he needed to know to make Prop Joe unnecessary. He had Stringer, Marlo and Omar coming to him for connections. Joe was "The Man" in my opinion.

Damn we need a couple more seasons, man. I wanna know what's up with Avon, Marlo, Slim Charles and Mike.
 
Avon. He had at least some sense of honor, community, and family. As much as I liked Stringer (at leas the actor Edris Elba's performance), he turned out to be a traitor. I was hoping Avon would off Marlo, but no go. I was disappointed.
 
I think the fundamental differences are that:

1. Avon was the true definition of a gangster

2. Stringer was a business man

3. Marlo was a sociological Psychopath

This can be also be backed up by the people that both Marlo and Avon had on their team as muscle. Take a look at Chris vs Weebey. I was reading somewhere that some people didn't like chris' character because he talked too properly for how ruthless he was. Well in my opinion that made him more scarier because you knew he was a certified psychopath which means most of killings go beyond logical rational for a reason to do so (besides him killing Michaels father because like Michael Chris was molested as a child also).

Anyway, with Weebey you can tell he was a gangster by the way he took those charges, spoke to his son, and his whole overall interaction with Avon. When Avon and Weebay are together the conversations are more normal they talk about shit outside of the game. With those niggas Marlo and Chris if the conversation ain't about "chris you killed that nigga yet" or some shit then it ain't a conversation going on between them.

A man is judged by the company he keeps.

To sum it up a TRUE gangster can be contempt with his territory and he lives by a code of rules (ie avon and his projects, that's all that nigga wanted. fuck stringer's business expansion and everything else. also he got made about the shooting on sunday)

A psychopath like Marlo aint contempt until he has the whole fucking world and he'll take a shot at the universe also if he has the chance because he wants something that is unachievable and mentally irrational, ABSOLUTE POWER. Furthermore, a man like Marlo can't live by rules because if he did that means his search for absolute power would be constrained and nullified by someone else's power over him to tell him how far his arms can reach, and with Marlo that's a big fucking no no.

My vote goes to AVON all day cause i ain't no psychopath. gotta have something to stand for or you will become a true fucking animal like Marlo.

Avon was super gangster, but he had restraint and smarts and compassion. If Stringer hadn't have snitched Avon would still be in the game. Even when Avon was in JAIL, he ran the show. Marlo and Stinger in jail wouldn't have done SHIT.

Omar-Good character,gay or not but he was to much of a renegade and suffered from that "Robinhood syndrome".He was never really a threat because as much as we want to think him and Avon were arch enemies,all they were doing was playing tag with each other,respectively.


Lets end this battle of Avon vs Marlo:
Out of the two who do you think would have more respect from the people on the streets?
Who would the consel be more obliged to welcome into the fold again,out of Marlo and Avon?
The street dealers,the young workers,the whole-sale buyers,who do you think they would rather give their business and loyalty to out of the two men?

That nigga had no initiative.

He said himself that he had been out there since he was 13.

He got killed at 21.

That means that this nigga was on the corner for a 8 years.

Seriously, when did you start watching the Wire? Season 3?

If you look back to Season 1, there's a scene where they have the "East vs. West" bball game (this is when the cops get their first glimpse at Avon). The Barksdale's rep/finance/coach the West team and Joe does the same for the East. It's clear that Joe is just as big as Avon, just he's on the East side.
 
In fact, Avon had just as good a connect as Joe, but Avon's connect got pressure on him around the same time Avon was getting pressure, naturally his connect cut off ties with Avon. This left Avon with real estate and no product. String, who was running the show cuz Avon was locked up, realized that they'd likely loose the real estate if they continued with that weak product. That's when he decided to go to his rival (Joe) and strike a deal, which Avon opposed. That's how the Co-op was formed, cuz business-minded String realized that if all the dealers in the city went in for one massive product, they could all get it for cheaper.

I won't go any further, I think you need to re-watch the first three seasons, cuz it must've gone over your head.
