Alien. I saw it when I was too young to see it, and my older sister traumatized me by telling Aliens were real and ate bad little brothers. As a punishment, my nightmares got so bad at one point my parents made my sister wake up and go to my room to calm me down. I still have problems watching that movie. I have no problems watching the rest of the movies in the series (except that one that sucked, really, really bad, when the Alien thought Ripley was its mom, that was horrible) Also, I think my fear of snakes is related to the first alien movie. How fast they strike, fangs/extra teeth: there is a relation there.

The Exorcist by far. The tension just mounted and mounted. The FX is dated but back then it was shocking. Even more so because it's juxtaposed against a regular bunch of folks tryna figure out wtf is going on. Aliens, because it's sci-fi, already asks you to suspend belief so it's gotta be second. Jaws is more an adventure flick. The other two are just cult slasher flicks IMO. Better than most but still just slice 'em dice 'em.

Exorcist buries everything. Everyone focuses on the girl's antics, but the screenplay was very well written & intelligent. And it's also one of the first horror flicks that didn't dumbdown the audience. Father Karras' dream sequence with the Pazuzu flash fucked with me for a while. Lol. Alien is a close second. People say it's sci-fi, but I saw it as a gothic horror flick.

For a while…? Man, Pazuzu still fucks me up.

im glad they never released that original teaser trailer

Exorcist shook me the most. The Omen was scary as fuck too. Halloween is classic but Jason did Michael like R Kelly did Aaron Hall...straight took all his shine. Jaws was always "meh" to me...maybe cuz I didn't grow up near a beach. Alien was great but I never considered it horror, although I guess it is. Texas Chainsaw was disturbing but not in a scary way...more like a "wtf is wrong with white people" way. I don't think I've ever seen the original Phantasm. I do remember when Phantasm 2 used to come on cable all the time though when I was young and I thought it was good. I should look that one up.

All Of those flicks were exceptional they offered true horror, tension and helplessness though out . The movie writers and producers today just rely on bullshit jump out at you shock shit. Alien and the Thing although classed as sci fi offered up some of the best horror still to this day.

Peace,

I don't consider Jaws or Alien horror flicks.
The Shining? The Omen? Rosemary's Baby? An argument can be made for the inclusion of these three.
Yes, Jaws was scary as hell I don't consider it a horror flick as much as the rest. I still enjoy this movie. I went to the theater to see the 30th anniversary, which was pretty sweet to see it on the big screen. Actually just watched it last week.

Great movie, which they made it a point not to show the shark too much. Good scary movies like Jaws and Silver Bullet (1985) for example have the scary thing as a headline but don't show that thing direct in on the camera too often. The illusion is what makes it even scarier.

The two old guys on the pier with the holiday roast. You never see the shark, you only see the parts of the pier turn around and race back toward the shore while the guy is in the water. That raised pulses without us ever seeing the shark.

And the Indianapolis story made this movie fucking awesome. This story was icing on the cake

All are great movies from that era... they added subliminal shit to The Exorcist (sounds & quick clips) to fuck with you more, but "Jaws" kept the masses out of the water due to it being too close for comfort!

The Exorcist changed the game to me. It became the standard for Horror Movies.

The Omen had some psychological shit going on that was creepy as well. That little boy had a shitty vibe going on.

Some sleepers.

The creepy catholic iconography and very macabre theme. The debut of Brooke Shields as well.

A medical thriller that will make you weary of doctors and hospitals. Disturbing look into the dark side of humanity. It did not have nothing supernatural or anything but the feeling of helplessness without a weapon wielding psycho, no demon, no monster, no alien. Just a twisted doctor.

A sleeper black horror movie from the 70s. A more creative blaxploitation take on vampires.
