Jeffries challenges Trump over ‘racist’ AI video: ‘Say it to my face’
House Minority Leader
Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) on Tuesday challenged President Trump over a deepfake video that depicted the House Democratic leader in a sombrero and slammed Trump and his party as “racist.”
The
fake video, posted on Trump’s Truth Social account Monday night, also showed Jeffries with an exaggerated handlebar mustache, while mariachi music plays in the background. It came just hours before an expected government shutdown that Democrats and Trump blame on one another.
The allusions to Mexican culture appear to be designed to highlight the Republican claims that Democrats are demanding federal benefits for migrants without legal status as a condition to winning their support on a budget bill — a charge the Democrats deny.
Jeffries, who met with Trump for the first time on Monday at the White House, lambasted the president on Tuesday, characterizing the video as “racist” and challenging Trump to make his personal attacks in person.
“Mr. President, the next time you have something to say about me, don’t cop out through a racist and fake AI video,” Jeffries said on the steps of the Capitol, where scores of Democrats gathered to urge Republicans to negotiate a bipartisan spending bill.
“When I’m back in the Oval Office, say it to my face,” he added. “Say it to my face.”
Trump has
a long history of attacking minorities and roiling racial tensions, both to energize his MAGA base and advance his political agenda. Jeffries, the first Black lawmaker to lead either party, has an equally long history of pushing back against Trump’s actions. The new video was just the latest clash in that ongoing feud.

Posted just hours after Trump huddled with congressional leaders on the shutdown, the video spoofs the press conference Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader
Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) gave outside the White House after leaving that meeting. The fake audio depicts Schumer attacking his own party as deeply unpopular “because of all of our woke, trans bulls—.”
“Not even Black people want to vote for us anymore,” the voice-over says.
On Tuesday, a short time after Jeffries’s response at the Capitol, Trump praised both Democratic leaders for the “very good discussion” at the White House a day earlier, referring to Jeffries as “a very nice gentleman.”
Announcing a new deal between the White House and major drug companies to lower prescription drug prices, Trump said the agreement could help grease the skids for a bipartisan deal on government spending.
“This has a big impact even on the discussion that we’ll have with Chuck Schumer, who was here yesterday, along with a very nice gentleman who I didn’t really know. You know who I’m talking about,” Trump said. “The two of them came and we [had] a very good discussion. And we’re going to see what happens.”
The back-and-forth came as the parties are at a stalemate over government spending, leading to widespread expectations of a shutdown at the end of the day on Tuesday.
