Oh shit I didn't know EA was the only games that had that wow.
The licensing issues back then might have been fairly draconian but overall it's really a preventative measure and response to the video game crash of 1983.
That crash in the west affected everything, it's the reason our NES doesn't look like the Famicom and it's the reason Nintendo shipped ROB the robot with the system.
Also I think Tengen did something similar with the NES, with their black carts.
