Hands down the 90s were the shit when it came to movies. Back then it wasn't nothing to go to the theater and be in that motherfucka for 6-8 hours because you stayed and watched every movie they had that day.

Post some black movies that you feel were slept on back then.

Phat Beach - 1996
I don't give a fuck what any of you niggas say, I loved this goddamn movie!
Jermaine "Huggy" Hopkins (Steel from Juice) holds it down as a fast food cook who, against his parents' wishes, heads to a Southern California beach to pick up chicks alongside his wise-cracking boy Brian Hicks (Whatever happened to dude?).

This is beach movie (popular in the 60's) but the difference is, it is a BLACK beach movie and the shit was funny as hell. Check it out if you never saw it...smoke some green and drink some Yak before though.
 
TRESPASS - 1992
Yo when I seen the commercial for this shit I damn near lost it. Come on' man...a gangsta movie starring Ice-T (non acting ass lol) and Ice Cube???? That shit was a no brainer, me an the guys went to see the shit the first day it came out. Most people thought the movie was garbage but I thought the shit was dope. I still watch it to this day whenever I can catch it on TV.

Nothing But Trouble (1991)
Not a Black movie but Digital Underground made me go see this movie when it came out. Shit even 2pac had a cameo in there but at that time I didn't even know who he was.

I don't know if people liked the movie back then but I use to binge watch it when it use to come on HBO (remember they played the same movies over and over again?)

Dope ass movie and would be tight to see a remake with the technology that they have now.

 
Hangin with the Homeboys - 1991

I slept on this movie until one day everyone was talking about the shit and quoting lines from the movie at school.
I love all night adventure movies so this was automatically classic to me. I think this is John Leguizamo's first movie but I am not sure. If you never seen this joint, download it and check it out right now...the shit is hilarious.

 
Once In The Life (2000) - During a brief jail stay, two half-brothers, who have rarely seen each other while growing up, connect. One of them, called 20/20 Mike because he can sense people nearby, concocts a scheme in which the two of them will steal drugs from young couriers. The heist goes awry when Billy, the junkie brother, shoots the victims of the theft. The brothers hole up in an abandoned building, and 20/20 Mike seeks help from an old cellmate, Tony, whom he thinks is out of the life. It turns out that they have stolen Tony's dope, and Tony's boss wants the two thieves dead. Once in the life of drug dealing and organized crime.... is there any way out? :dunno:

Most HBO fans will immediately recognize his famous father: Dominic Chianese Sr. (aka "Junior Soprano" :yes:)

Since I see one from 2000, I will go ahead and say "3 Strikes" from 2000 as well...classic comedy that was almost as good as Friday but never gets mentioned for some reason
 
Devil In A Blue Dress (1995) - Talk about being 'slept on'... this movie only made $16 million at the box office, back in 1995. :smh:



A Stellar Cast + Great Directing + a Top-Notch Storyline + Great Acting Performances, all around. :yes:
Unfortunately, the timing of this movie was its biggest weakness at the box office. :smh:

Because Devil In A Blue Dress hit movie theaters the very same weekend as the Brad Pitt / Morgan Freeman blockbuster called "Se7en" :smh: and the very next weekend "Dead Presidents" came out. :smh: Followed by "Get Shorty" another week or so, after that. :rolleyes:

To Sleep With Anger (1990) - Vagabond Harry (Danny Glover) pays an unexpected visit to his old chum Gideon (Paul Butler), who accepts the aimless man into his home, despite the fact that the household is already overcrowded.

Hard-drinking yet charismatic, Harry both entertains and enrages Gideon and his wife, Suzie (Mary Alice). However, after Gideon falls gravely ill, Harry decides to step in and take his friend's place in the household. The Tuskegee Airmen (1995) - A semi-fictionalized account of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-African-American Air Force squadron during World War II, the film centers on ambitious young pilot Hannibal Lee (Laurence Fishburne). Despite initial reticence by higher ranking white officers, Lee, along with Walter Peoples (Allen Payne), Leroy Cappy (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), and others, are deployed into combat. As the successful missions mount, the Tuskegee Airmen develop a reputation as an able, fearsome group of pilots.

i caught once in the life late one night a decade ago on cable. that shit is such a dope movie. i believe it was a play. man that shit was pressure like a mf on tony. great cast.

A Low Down Dirty Shame (1994) - A black detective becomes embroiled in a web of danger while searching for a fortune in missing drug money. During the course of his investigation, he encounters various old connections, ultimately confronting the criminal responsible for Shame's expulsion from the force. He must also deal with two women, Angela, a beautiful old flame, and Peaches, his energetic but annoying sidekick.
