I think you just wanna say something different for the sake of it but how is apocalypto a different genre??????
Cinematography was beautiful, acting was great, sense of dread and death was apparent the entire film, felt cold the entire time watching, the action was brutal and unforgiving. Man, if they dont give that man Leo an Oscar for this role I dont know if he'll ever get one. I give it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars
movie warrants an oscar nomination...don't think it'll win tho...leo absolutely not imo...his performances draw no emotion from me...he's like the white will smith...he's def a box office draw and he's a very good actor...both choose great scripts but are not great actors imo

Good movie over all though shit felt plausible and authentic. His boy was a real asshole bitch with that " blink " shit. Nucca gotta blink!!! In restrospect now knowing I would've pay to see this shit. It very rewatchable. Hate to admit I liked that hateful 8 shit two.

Yes, the revenant was a beautiful movie, but the story was minimal, the acting was meh
I also cant be the only one who is tired of Tom Hardy basically being the same character in every movie these days. I fell in love with
his acting after seeing Locke, but it seems that dude just dials it in now.
ya I almost don't wanna watch legend on the strength of his performance in this flick...he def plays the same brooding mumbling character...his voice actually annoyed the shit outta me in this flick...I don't think I've seen locke...might catch it after I get done w/ all these screeners
ok I understand where you're coming from now...I guess that could be considered a subgenre def setting...don't think it'd be fair to limit the discussion by only comparing it to just western flicks tho...the story overall is a classic tale of revenge...coming back from death's door type shit...so I think it's fair to compare it to other movies despite the time period/setting...apocalypto came to mind (even tho it's more about escaping death than revenge)...gladiator...unforgiven...shit revenge w/ kevin costner...kill bill

Man! That bear scene alone is worth the price of admission which... Is nothing because I downloaded it, but it was awesome. Unfortunately, I got sleepy and fell asleep after that so I will watch it again tomorrow from the bear scene on. It is getting rave reviews though. Definitely Oscar bait and might be DiCaprio's first Oscar
Movie was good. Bear scene was intense. Hardy was a muthafucker though. Did some real fucked up shit in that movie.

I appreciate the cinematography and scenery. Liked that the Indians weren't shown as pure savages, but rather people out for revenge themselves. It would have been nice to know what DiCarprio's background with the Indians were, but I guess that's a different movie.
As someone called out before, the the theme has been done before in other films, but only thing really different is he had to fight against the elements as well as people to survive. Even with all the furs, I just don't see how he doesn't die from hypothermia or suffer extreme frostbite. He's in near frozen water, crawling in snow, with no heat (most of the time). That was a bit of a stretch to me.

Early in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s frontier endurance test The Revenant, Leonardo DiCaprio comes between a mama grizzly and her cubs, resulting in a vicious attack (which was misidentified by some viewers as a rape) that sets the film’s plot in motion. Should you, like DiCaprio’s character Hugh Glass, ever find yourself in such a situation, here — according to ursine expert Paige Davidson of the Montana Grizzly Encounter sanctuary — is a handy primer that’ll help minimize the mauling.
1. Make Noise
Glass is quietly trundling through the snow before the attack. Big mistake. “Bears have an innate fear of humans,” says Davidson. “If they hear a voice, they’re not going to stick around.” A sensible modern frontiersperson should carry a pepper-based bear-deterrent spray, but that didn’t exist in 1823 — being loud was the best substitute.
2. Avoid Eye Contact
Eye contact and assertive posture, both of which Glass offers in the few seconds before the animal hits him, can be interpreted by a grizzly as signs of aggression. The key, explains Davidson, is to “turn your head to the side so that the bear can’t tell that you’re looking at it.” If you can manage that, talking to the bear is a good idea, too, so that “the bear knows you’re human” and lumbers away.
3. Drop and Stop
In the film, DiCaprio’s character never deescalates the situation and has to endure the bear’s attack. If that happens, your best (though admittedly bad) option is to lie flat on your stomach with your hands clasped at the knuckles over the back of your neck to protect your jugular. Wearing a backpack helps too, as bears usually bite the closest thing — Glass only had his rump to offer. Though, as Davidson points out, “you can take a bite to the butt and survive.”
4. Be Still
Post-attack, the bear of The Revenant spends a few seconds standing on Glass’s head, sniffing him and drooling on his face. Glass then whimpers rather than screams — this time, quietness is smart, because, says Davidson, “the only way a bear knows to tell you to stop screaming is to bite where the noise is coming from.” When the mama bear walks off, Glass makes a mistake by crawling away, activating the bear’s instinct to chase prey. “You want to stay in that position until you’re positive that the bear is no longer in the area.”
5. Let It Go
Glass shoots the departing bear in the shoulder, incurring more mauling. Retaliation, says Davidson, “is not a good idea. Unless you’re an expert marksman who can shoot a bear running at you at 35 miles an hour while you’re crapping your pants.”

I thought movie was very good. Not sure if winning best picture, but can see awards for cinematography. My biggest complaint was Tom Hardy's character was exactly the same as Alfie from Peaky Blinders. I really liked him as Alfie, but in Revenant he uses the same voice, look and idiosyncrancies from PB. Was a little disappointing.
Enjoyed it... ran a little long for me though. Seemed like a directors cut. They could have cut a little here and there to speed up the pacing. You pretty much know how it will end after "spoiler'. The bear scene was awesome though
