BALTIMORE -- Carmelo Anthony says he plans to test free agency. But that doesn't necessarily mean he plans to leave the Knicks.

"It's definitely an opportunity that I'm willing to explore and experience," Anthony said Thursday morning. "That not whatsoever means that I'm not coming back to New York or I don't want to be here in New York. So I don't want nobody to get that impression."

If he becomes a free agent, will Carmelo Anthony re-sign with the Knicks?

Yes
No

Anthony reiterated Thursday that he will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Knicks and test free agency this summer.

If Anthony opts out, it makes financial sense for him to re-sign with New York.

With the Knicks, he could ink a five-year contract worth about $129.1 million. If he signs with another team, the maximum he can earn is about $95.9 million over four years, according to calculations by ESPN salary-cap expert Larry Coon. Those numbers are based on the assumption that Anthony, one of the top scorers in the NBA, will sign a max contract.

Anthony had an opportunity to become a free agent at the end of the 2010-11 season. Instead, he signed a contract extension with the Knicks shortly after being dealt to New York.

Now, he's intrigued by the idea of being courted as a free agent.

"Guys would like to have that situation and just see what it's about," Anthony said. "It doesn't mean that just because somebody wants to be [a free agent] that they're going to leave. Me leaving would never [come] across in my mind."

Knicks coach Mike Woodson, for one, thinks Anthony is staying put.

"I think so. You ask me today, yes, absolutely," Woodson said. "I don’t see him leaving. That’s just my thought."

Melo's Place

Carmelo Anthony is the Knicks' biggest star. He's also one of the all-time greats.
ESPN NY's Top 25 Knicks Vote

The Knicks, who will make every effort to retain Anthony, can begin extension negotiations with him in February. But if Anthony decides to opt out, New York will likely have plenty of competition for his services.

ESPN.com reported over the summer that the Los Angeles Lakers would target Anthony and LeBron James in the summer of 2014 if both stars decide to explore free agency.

"What other team would they [the media] say?" Anthony said of the Lakers. "I don't think they would say any other team. If you look at situations, that's the only team that they probably would say."

Anthony was asked if he'd consider playing only in a big market such as Los Angeles.

"I'm in New York. Like I said, this is not something that I want to keep going on," Anthony said. "At the end of the day, I don't want to go anywhere, I don't plan on going anywhere. But when that time comes, I'll deal with that situation."

It's worth noting that some big-name free agents under the most recent CBA have opted to sign with another team rather than staying with their former teams for more money.

Dwight Howard, for one, took less money to sign with the Houston Rockets rather than re-sign with the Lakers. As did Andre Iguodala.

Howard's decision to leave the Lakers seemed to take Woodson by surprise.

"If I was a Laker, I don’t know if I would ever have left the Lakers because of what they’d done over the years," Woodson said. "[But] it has changed. Players are always looking for something better. That’s just a sign of the times. It’s different. It’s what it is. But Melo, if he’s going to test, it he’s got to test it. That’s on him."

Let's look at teams that were under the Knicks during the playoffs.

Pacers- Everyone is intact and this team has Granger back along with Copeland who will have a year under his belt and coming off the bench in a assist happy team.

Bulls- Derrick Rose

Nets- Acquired Garnett and Pierce and Terry along with a coach who was instrumental in there season. Still have Williams and Lopez.

Heat- No explanation needed.

The Champs... ARE THE CHAMPS...

Overall... We've improved in terms of age... and depth...

BUT... no one is giving us a chance... and that's how I like it... No one gave us a chance to be over .500 last year... So... I like our chances now...

Nah... Bargni 's the better player... Novak is a specialist... Bargni can create his OWN shot...

Not true bro. 85% of Bargs FG were jumpshots and of those 77% were assisted. A shot creator he is not. I agree with you on Novak though.

From what I've been seen from him so far... He's put the ball on the floor and created his own shot...

Let's not forget... This dude averaged 21pts per game 2 years ago...

Now, I'm not saying he's gonna give us that... BUT... you can't do that without being able to create your own shot...

Whereas... Novak... WHO WAS MY DUDE... never... EVER... put the ball on the floor... :smh:

Bargni will open up the floor and he can be a match-up problem as well...

can't really have a knicks thread without blackloop in it..the mofo with a Knicks logo on his sig

let's go KNICKS

Went to the Bmore Classic last night, that boy Tim "Party Time" Hardaway will be the real deal!

Anyone else have that odd feeling that this is Shump's last year with the squad? If THjr. can consistently score off the bench, I can see Mills trying to package Shump with Amar'e for cap relief and a stop gap big man.

I don't think any GM bites but the reports have been that Shump is our most appealing prospect and teams have been trying to trade for him all offseason. I love the kid, but those injury concerns are starting to make him loss some luster in my eyes.

Fuck the rest, it's back to live action! LETS GO!

What y'all want for Shumpert right now

Smith, STAT, Martin scrimmage

One week before the Knicks open their season, Mike Woodson had Amar'e Stoudemire, J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin participate in a team scrimmage for the first time this preseason.

"A lot of talent and depth," Woodson told reporters, according to Newsday, after a Knicks practice in Toronto on Tuesday. "If we're able to stay healthy and there's no setbacks, we got a lot of depth."

The health of all three Knicks will be paramount for the team’s success this season. Stoudemire has had three knee procedures in a year. The big man came out of the 10-minute scrimmage feeling good.

“I felt extremely strong," Stoudemire said, according to the paper. "My legs may be as strong as they've ever been before. I felt no discomfort at all. I felt no pain at all. So great, great sign."

The Knicks are cautiously moving forward with Stoudemire and Martin, who has been icing his left ankle throughout camp. It’s likely that both will not play in either of the Knicks’ remaining two preseason games: at Milwaukee on Wednesday and against Charlotte on Friday.

But the regular-season opener remains a possibility for both big men.

"That's the goal," Stoudemire said. "I didn't play the opener last year. I want to get out there and see what I can do. If I keep improving and my body keeps getting stronger, we'll see how it goes."

Woodson also said Martin and Stoudemire will not play in back-to-back games.

Woodson allowed that Smith could play Friday at the Garden, if there’s no swelling or pain in his left knee, which has undergone two surgeries in the offseason

"The way J.R. moved it's like he hasn't missed a beat," Woodson said.

If Smith is healthy, he still can’t play right away as he has to serve a five-game suspension for violating terms of the NBA’s anti-drug policy. The shooter can return as early as Nov. 10 against the Spurs.

"No minute restrictions," Smith said after practice. "When I come back I want to be able to go out there full strength, full head of steam with no restrictions. If I'm under restrictions I'm not at the best ability to help the team."

According to Newsday, point guard Raymond Felton (strained left hamstring) will not play on Wednesday in Milwaukee, but Iman Shumpert (sprained right elbow) could return for the preseason game.

The knicks should do well this season. I think MWP is going to be the steal of the FA when it comes to the knicks because he was exactly what they needed. A forward who could be a goon, play good defense, and score if necessary.

They still need a post threat and maybe a faster, more dynamic PG to be a legit top contender but like the last 3 seasons I think the Media is underrating them. They can definitely be a top seed and do well in the playoffs.
