Another lyin' ass republican!

American politics is a fickle bitch. One day you're Marco Rubio, Tea Party pretty boy and front-runner for the Republican vice presidential nomination. The next day, you're just an asshole who distorted his family history to play on the sympathy of constituents, including fellow Cuban-Americans.

According to documents unearthed by birthers earlier this week, Rubio isn't actually the "son of exiles" he claims to be. His parents came to the United States in 1956 -- nearly three years before Castro came to power.

So much for transparency, Marco.

The quasi scandal began earlier this week when birthers once again began grumbling about Rubio's qualifications for the presidency.

Yesterday morning, The St. Petersburg Times checked out the claims of Charles Kerchner, a birther who said nationalization records showed that Rubio's parents arrived in the U.S. in 1956 -- not 1959 as Rubio has often stated.

Rubio's own Senate biography says that his parents, Mario and Oriales Rubio, "came to America following Fidel Castro's takeover" -- meaning 1959 at the earliest.

The Washington Post quickly picked-up on the snafu in a scathing article:

...the 40-year-old senator with the boyish smile and prom-king good looks has drawn on the power of that claim to entrance audiences captivated by the rhetorical skills of one of the more dynamic stump speakers in modern American politics.

The real story of his parents' migration appears to be a more conventional immigrant narrative, a couple who came to the United States seeking a better life. In the year they arrived in Florida, the future Marxist dictator was in Mexico plotting a quixotic return to Cuba.

Of course, we reported more than a year ago that Rubio's shit wasn't as unstinky as he claimed. He's a world-class opportunist whose fiscal conservatism is a facade. But we didn't see this coming.

Rubio admitted to the Post that his parents arrived in 1956, but then fell back on some very un-vice-presidential excuses for his mistake.

"I'm going off the oral history of my family," he said. "All of these documents and passports are not things that I carried around with me."

Yeah, right. Any self-respecting cubano sure as hell knows when his or her family arrived in the United States. Heck, most can tell you the exact day.

Marco Rubio (R-FL) either wasn’t being vetted by Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential search team or he wasn’t being vetted as much as two other choices, Romney made a statement to correct the record. “Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted as part of our process,” he told reporters, per NBC’s Garrett Haake. But here’s a little rule of thumb in American politics:

If you have to say you’re vetting someone, is that someone really under serious consideration?

Indeed, despite being the party’s rising star and a favorite of the GOP base, the signs always have pointed AGAINST Rubio being Romney’s pick. Why?

• For starters, he’s only been a U.S. senator for a year and a half, and he didn’t endorse Romney until late in the GOP primary season.

• Then there’s the opposition research out there on him -- something that the Romney folks who worked for Charlie Crist’s 2010 Senate campaign know pretty well: Rubio charged more than $100,000 to state GOP credit cards, had racked up nearly $1 million in personal debt, and had nearly had his home foreclosed on.

No doubt that Rubio has plenty of assets (young, Latino, from Florida). But he also carries a lot of risk for the usually risk-averse Romney.

Marco Rubio used his influence to help his convicted drug-dealer brother-in-law


Sen. Marco Rubio reportedly used his elected office to needle regulators and score a real estate license for his convicted drug dealer brother-in-law.

In 2002, Rubio wielded his influence as majority whip of the Florida House of Representatives to recommend relative Orlando Cicilia for a real estate license despite a prior conviction for drug trafficking,The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Rubio used his official statehouse stationery for a letter to the Florida Division of Real Estate that advocated for "licensure without reservation" but did not disclose Cicilia was married to his older sister Barbara, The Post said.

Cicilia previously served a lengthy prison sentence for his role as the reported "front man" for Cuban-American cocaine kingpin Mario Tabraue, a drug lord who kept spotted leopards on the grounds of his mansion.

When he was in the Florida legislature, Sen. Marco Rubio wrote a letter of recommendation for his brother-in-law, a convicted drug trafficker, to get a real estate license.
Cicilia, 58, also went to trial in 1989 and was convicted of distributing $15 million worth of cocaine.

He was out of jail less than two years when Rubio sent his glowing endorsement to state regulators, The Post reported after obtaining the letter through the Florida Public Records Act.

Now running for the Republican presidential nomination, Rubio reportedly wrote to the regulators in 2002 that he had know Cicilia "for over 25 years." He did not elaborate on the relationship or mention that the former drug dealer was living in the same West Miami residence as Rubio's parents, The Post reported.

Rubio, 44, declined to answer questions about Cicilia, the newspaper said.

Now the junior U.S. Senator from Florida, Rubio also declined to say whether he or his family received financial assistance from Cicilia before or after the dealer's home was seized but the money was not recovered, according to The Post.

An adviser to Rubio’s presidential campaign said the candidate did nothing wrong.

“It was not unusual at all for Marco to recommend Floridians for any number of professional positions. He felt it would have been highly inappropriate and could have been viewed as exerting undue influence if he had stated that Orlando was a relative,” Rubio spokesman and advisor Todd Harris told the Daily News late Wednesday.

He said Cicilia “made some very big mistakes almost 30 years ago, served his time, and has paid his debt to society.”

Harris said Rubio believed it would be "highly inappropriate, and could be perceived as exerting undue pressure, if his letter stated that Orlando was a relative."

At least one watchdog group said the conflict of interest should have been disclosed.

"It's wrong to use your public office for personal or private gaine," Danielle Brian, executive director at the Project on Government Oversight, told the newspaper.

Rubio mentioned Cicilia's legal troubles in his 2012 memoir "An American Son" but did not delve into the scope of the drug enterprise.

He recalled looking after Cicilia's dogs as a teenager to earn money to buy tickets for Miami Dolphins football games.

Rubio's spokesman Todd Harris has said the politician was only 16 years old when Cicilia was arrested and that the incident was a private family matter.

Marc Short, the Koch brothers’ top political adviser in Washington and a trusted member of their inner circle for five years, is making a surprise move to the Marco Rubio campaign as a senior adviser as the Republican establishment ramps up efforts to stop Donald Trump.

Short — president of Freedom Partners, the Kochs’ umbrella political organization — will join the campaign in about a week and brings deep connections to the donor and grass-roots worlds.

Marc has been running the most sophisticated political operation for the last few cycles, and really knows the mood of the electorate," said Scott Reed, senior political strategist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "This is a big sign of consolidation by the party.”

Charles and David Koch have not endorsed in the presidential race and are unlikely to while there are still multiple viable candidates running against Trump, according to GOP sources. Top backers in the brothers' network include supporters of Rubio and Sen. Ted Cruz. Any decision to get involved in the nomination race would likely come only if it narrowed to Trump and one of those senators, the sources said.

Mark Holden, chairman of Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement: "Marc Short has advised me that he is resigning effective immediately … Marc has been a valued leader and contributor to Freedom Partners’ and our network’s success for the past five years.”

Holden continued: “Marc leaves behind a strong leadership team at Freedom Partners and working with them, we will continue to work to further our goal of a free and prosperous society for all Americans. We look forward to continuing our work with our partners to further these goals in 2016 and beyond.”

Ward Baker, executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Short is “a man of integrity and faith.”

“No one understands data and how data works better than Marc," Baker said.

Phil Cox, former executive director of the Republican Governors Association, called Short “a steady, respected hand at the top of a complex, multifaceted organization.”

“This is a big get for Rubio,” Cox added. “Marc brings a unique perspective as one of the few people who have had one foot in traditional Republican Party politics and another in more movement-conservative efforts.”
