I used to go to both The Portland Power (ABL) and Portland Fire (WNBA) when I lived in that city back in the day. It's definitely a Basketball city.
But for the new expansion team to be on the scale of Golden State, it's going to take some creative and innovative promotion and marketing. The Valkyries success mostly came from marketing and a beautiful logo. Using (Norse) Mythology to promote a Female Basketball team was FUCKIN' BRILLIANT!!!
Then came the team picks. Especially getting Kayla Thorton and Kate Martin. Thorton's got a championship with The NY Liberty. So that kind of makes her a mentor of sorts. This on top of Natalie Nakase as the sports first Asian-American Coach.

Spot on. The Valkyries did an awesome job of marketing. Getting players from the Warriors and 49ers involved was a big time boost also. Not to mention the teasing of possibly getting Paige Buckers. They knocked it out the park.
