He was in shock and trying to stay calm.
theres a pretty good chance he didnt survive....and that much falling on your head minus a helmet.....
All the race engines I see have those straps to keep the heads from blowing off. what happened here?

this killed a guy at my job. they were cutting old pip partially buried and the tension was released

Good question. Yes NHRA, and other race organizations use the tie downs, I don't know what happened here.
Yes he was lucky! Another thing that helped him was that the car was light. Formula 1 cars usually weigh less that 1,500 lbs. Even though he sustained minor injuries, it's not how it would be if he got ran over by a Buick Roadmaster.
