5 Racial Justice Issues
You Can’t Ignore This NFL Season

#5. Domestic violence: The league let down at least half of its fans, who are women, when it handed down a paltry three-game suspension to Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, who was caught on tape brutally assaulting his then-fiance. “It’s a joke, and a bad one,”wroteespnW’s Jane McManus. “Worse, it leaves the door open for people to think that Janay Rice bears a lot of the responsibility for eliciting the punch that seemingly knocked her out.”In fact, that sentiment was backed up by ESPN’s Steven Smith, whose tone-deaf rant about women needing to learn not to “provoke” their attackers earned him a week-long suspension from the network. Recently, 49ers player Ray McDonald was arrested for domestic violence charges. Let’s hope the league learns its lesson this time around.

Cardinals running back Jonathan Dywer was arrested in Arizona on Wednesday on charges related to domestic violence. Dwyer has been charged with aggravated assault and preventing someone from calling 911, the CBS Evening News has reported.

Dwyer was involved in two separate situations in July, according to Fox Sports 1. The victims are listed as a 27-year-old female and an 18-month-old child. Dwyer is married with one child.

According to TMZ, the two altercations allegedly took place on July 21 and July 22 and Dwyer is facing a total of five charges: one count of aggravated assault causing a fracture, one count of aggravated assault involving a minor, two counts of criminal damage and one count of preventing someone from calling 911.

The Cardinals reacted quickly to the arrest, the team announced that Dwyer has been deactivated for this week's game against the 49ers.

Is the female task force enough?

Many say no. <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">The Black Women's Roundtable</span>, which is made up of female leaders who represent black women and girls, said Tuesday that it appreciated the league's decision to bring in domestic violence experts as consultants, but it <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">argued that the "lack of inclusion of women of color, especially black women who are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault; and the fact that over 66% of the NFL players are made up of African-Americans, is unacceptable."</span> The Rev. Jesse Jackson has also criticized the NFL's decision to hire three white female domestic violence experts.

The NFL acknowledged that cultural changes will be necessary, with spokesman Brian McCarthy saying, "To be successful and make a real difference, the entire NFL will be responsible for the development and implementation of education, training and support programs."
