Jim Kouzes has been thinking about leadership ever since he was one of only a dozen Eagle Scouts to be selected to serve in John F. Kennedy's honor guard when Kennedy was inaugurated President of the United States. Kennedy's inaugural call to action -- "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." -- inspired Jim to join the Peace Corps, and he taught school in Turkey for two years.

That experience made Jim realize that he wanted a career that offered two things: the chance to teach and the opportunity to serve. It was in his first job back in the U.S. training community action agency managers that Jim found his calling, and he has devoted his life to leadership development ever since.

Jim Kouzes is the coauthor with Barry Posner of the award-winning and best-selling book, The Leadership Challenge, with over 1.8 million copies in print. He's also the Dean's Executive Professor of Leadership, Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University. Jim and Barry have coauthored several other bestselling leadership books including A Leader's Legacy, Encouraging the Heart and Credibility. Their books are extensively researched-based, and over 400 doctoral dissertations and academic studies have been based on their original work.

Not only is Jim a highly regarded leadership scholar, The Wall Street Journal cited Jim as one of the twelve best executive educators in the U.S. A. Jim and Barry are the recipients of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) 2009 Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance Award, presented in recognition of their extensive body of work and the significant impact they have had on learning and performance in the workplace.

This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies.

How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated.

Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to “the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people.” He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated.

He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person’s point of view and “arousing in the other person an eager want.” You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment.

For instance, “let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers,” and “talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.” Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks.

"Leadership is personal. It's not about the corporation, the community, or the country. It's about you. If people don't believe in the messenger, they won't believe the message.

If people don't believe in you, they won't believe in what you say. And if it's about you, then it's about your beliefs, your values, your principles."— from Credibility In this best-selling book, Kouzes and Posner (authors of The Leadership Challenge), explain why leadership is above all a relationship, with credibility as the cornerstone.

They provide rich examples of real managers in action and reveal the six key disciplines and related practices that strengthen a leader's capacity for developing and sustaining credibility. Kouzes and Posner show how leaders can encourage greater initiative, risk-taking, and productivity by demonstrating trust in employees and resolving conflicts on the basis of principles, not positions.

Building and maintaining a successful team is no simple task. Even people who have taken their teams to the highest level in their field have difficulty recreating what accounted for their successes.

Is it a strong work ethic? Is it "chemistry"? What tools can you wrap your hands around to build - or rebuild - your team?

John C. Maxwell shares the vital principles of team building that are necessary for success in your business, family, church, or organization.

The author of 24 books on maximizing personal and leadership potential, John C. Maxwell believes "the difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure." In Failing Forward, he offers inspirational advice for turning the difficulties that inevitably arise in life into stepping stones that help you reach the top.

Noting that star performers are often those who aggressively push forward after encountering adversity, Maxwell shows how a variety of well-known and not-so-well-known people have forged ahead despite obstacles that could have derailed them.

They include: Mary Kay Ash, who founded her cosmetics firm against enormous odds when the direct-sales company she toiled in for 25 years resisted her continued corporate climb; Truett Cathy, who lost two brothers (and business partners) in an airplane crash and experienced his own serious medical problems before establishing the Chick-fil-A fast-food chain; Greg Horn, who reopened his Kentucky grocery store just 21 days after it suffered $1 million in flood damage; and Beck Weathers, who lost his nose, half of one arm, and the fingers on his other in the infamous 1996 Into Thin Air Mt. Everest tragedy, but now takes a positive message of survival and conquest to audiences around the world.

This is a really spectacular thread. Thanks for the posts bruh!

To this day the 7 Habits of Successful People remains one of the most useful books I've ever read...the other books in that series aren't far behind and there are quite a few Covey books in here (along with authors I've never heard of!).

5 star post.

I constantly see leaders—leaders who are building some of the most successful companies and organizations—get “blown up.” What happened to them? How did these individuals who have reached the top of their profession by doing all the right things, slip and fall?

They were blown up by problems they never saw coming.

What I’m about to share with you are five common landmines I have stepped on as well, so I’m speaking from experience.

Goleman begins by telling us how much the rules have changed in the world of work. There is no such thing as job security anymore. Once, what sort of job you ended up in depended on how well you did in college or your technical skills. But now, academic or technical ability are simply the threshold requirements to gain entry to a career.

Beyond this, what makes you a 'star' is your possession of things such as resilience, initiative, optimism, adaptability to change and empathy towards others. Very few employers will give as a reason for hiring someone that they were 'emotionally intelligent', but it will often be the decisive factor. Other terms might be used like character, personality, maturity, soft skills and a drive for excellence.

Goleman lays our the reason why emotional intelligence matters to companies now and why they want to increase it amongst their staff: because in competitive industries, growth from new products is limited. Companies do not compete just on products, but how well they utilize their people. In a very competitive business environment, it is the EI skills that will take a company further.
