The Kalief Browder Story. Catch it on Spike. NY Raises age limit and plans to close Rikers

Speedy trials and increasing the age limit hopefully stems some of the sociopath behavior that can result for being stuck in limbo or put in a box for a month straight.

And it's unfair to say something won't work until you try it.

Bro the basis of my main argument was that the special spent too much time attacking the department of corrections for things beyond their control. Speedy trials and age limits are come from the criminal justice system not the department of corrections.

It's fair to try good ideas. So its worth the effort to spend billions of tax payer dollars to build prisons on black and Latino neighborhoods. Fire thousands of correction officers. And ignore the fact that inmates behavior have not improved when in the smaller borough facilities? Do you know inmates on Rikers have access to PS4 and Xbox one, they are given free osha classes, food handling classes and other courses so they could get certificates. The department literally pays inmates to behave and violence hasn't been this high since the early 90s. What does that tell you?

Seeing how you are a CO, I see how your offended but IMO I don't believe the doc made y'all into the Boogieman. It clearly showed how bias the court system was to our youth and how much they truly don't give a fuck about a fair trial.

In terms of Rikers, it's gotta go. It's become an enabler for the slow court system. It's a surrogate prison for NYC. The fact they able to get certificates at a jail, not a prison is problematic in itself no? I know y'all doing y'all best on the island but it's a hellhole. My boys says working at Rikers is like doing time. Eight to twelve hours of no phone and inside with angry dudes who don't know what their sentence will be harden anybody so I feel your gripe but that shit has to go. Hopefully with the new facilities, everyone is transferred and the trial process speeds up so the violence curtails.

You don't understand. Thats why I get offended when people who don't know about the prison system try to dictate how it is operated. Rikers island has nothing to do with courts, court dates, prison sentences, arrests, bails. It's just a place people wait while the court system does its thing. Just the fact that you're referencing Rikers island and trial times means you're falling for the okie doke and deflecting blame from the criminal justice system.

Also nothing has supported the fact that smaller commands curtail violence in prisons.

Bruh the blame falls on the system, that I admit. But if your fixing the entire system, you don't keep the face on the inept system intact. You clear everything.

And under a new system (18 and up inmates, speedier trials, borough jails) violence may decrease

Bruh the only one of those things that might help violence a little is speedier trials because it will help get certain off of the island before they get too comfortable. I already mentioned that the jail holding inmates who are 19 and up is the worst on the island. The borough prisons have more violence than the prisons on the island. If you know COs ask them if they want to go work at Brooklyn house or mdc. Once again you never mentioned consequences for inmates who commit acts of violence. How are you supposed to curb violence without actual punishments for acts of violence? I've been working on Rikers for 8 years bro. Despite what you and the rest of the public thinks the department of corrections has become extremely soft handed. Especially for the past 3 years. We let liberal politicians and inmate sympathizers determine how our department is run. Rikers hasn't been this violent in decades. Look up the numbers. Right now our commissioner is doing interviews and telling people he wants the NYCDOC to be the first prison department with no solitary confinement. All these suggestions and not one that places accountability on the inmates themselves.

I'm talking clearing everything my man. Rikers, BK House, MCU, etc. A clear reset/rebuild of everything. If we're going be progressive on the court side, shouldn't we be progressive on the prison side too?

In terms of how to stop violence without the hole, your inside...What would you suggest?

I don't suggest taking away solitary continent period. That's why every prison in America has solitary confinement. All we did was reduce solitary confinement for adults now inmates are going wild.

My thing Leroy is acknowledgment. You can't acknowledge the fact that Kalief was a problem but not acknowledge some CO's were a problem too.

Of course there are COs that are a problem. The officers bringing in contraband and playing buddy buddy with inmates. How much of the footage in that documentary showed officers physically engage Kaleif? All they showed was the same 2 clips over and over. The clip where the officer took him to the ground with no punches or kicks and the clip when the captain and officers took him to the ground with no punches or kicks. But they say over and over that COs were abusing him. Dude was a supreme asshole and disliked by officers throughout his entire jail and all you have is officers twice taking him to the ground using control holds.

What you did see was Kaleif fighting other inmates over and over. Then you'd hear statements like "that shouldn't be allowed and the officers should stop it". The officers did stop it, they wrote him tickets and sent him to the box to serve out his box days. While in the box he racked up more box days by spitting on people and throwing piss and shit. That's not the norm. I've worked in the box only a few inmates do shit like that. Generally its the inmates who are assholes even when they aren't in the box.

You got it brother. Y'all just doing what y'all got to do while working in that hellhole.

I didn't watch this when it first aired. Now it's on Netflix and it's so sad.

I know some people belong there, but everyone that goes to jail arent necessarily bad, why are they treated like this, when yet people complain about being treated like animals. This type of stuff scare me.

Treated like what?
You fell for the okie doke. Instead of questioning why he was locked up for so long over a bullshit charge you're questioning clearly biased portrail of Rikers Island.

I didn't fall for anything. There have been stories for years about how HORRIBLE Rikers Island is. A guy even did a YouTube series about it, so nothing about that shit hole is about me being biased. Are you saying Rikers Island is not what they are saying?

And clearly the system failed him for his being there that long to begin with. But why you butt hurt behind my opinion?

He's a CO on Rikers. That'll answer all that you need to know.

Oh well fuck him because he's part of the problem. And based on his answer I can see him doing the shit described in the video. Again fuck him!

Like I said you fell for the okie doke. Slow bitches like you are the reason the system will never be fixed. Instead of focusing on NYCs broken legal system and going after the judges, lawyers and prosecutors you're out there screaming close rikers island. That's exactly what the man wants your shortsighted ass to do. That way he can continue to imprison young black men for bullshit.
I'm not going to debate you about whats going on in Rikers island. I've been there for close to a decade and you watched a YouTube series.

Again are you saying NONE of what was shown happens??
I'm a slow bitch but you're a pussy defending a fucked up prison system. So according to what you just typed no one is to blame, especially not shitty mediocre broke ass correctional officers. Get on with that BS.
I bet you one of those bringing in contraband.

I sympathize but i feel like the young man could of done more to help him self out in this situation, specifically during incarceration. this is coming from a old young knuckle head who has been through it. instead of gang banging in lock up, why aren't you reading your court paper work or asking questions from other inmates on how the system works? i mean if you truly want your freedom, most inmates aren't there on their first rodeo and are familiar with the system.

When he does go to court and sees his lawyer why aren't you asking a lot of questions or evening requesting a new lawyer if he's not answering your questions or doing his job? believe me plenty of jail house lawyers and some know what their talking about if nothing else from experience of being in and out of the system, some since juveniles and know the court like the back of their hand. :dunno: not taking any blame from d.o.c or n.y.p.d or court system. but i been there. know your rights black man.

I stated that the focus should be on the legal system. Not once did you blame the actual people that kept him in prison for years over bullshit. Even if you were absolutely right about the DOC and its treatment of inmates your slow ass is focused on the tail of the beast not the head. Did you notice that 70% of the documentary was focused on shitting on the DOC while maybe 15% focused on the court system. Did it ever occur to you that the media would rather scapegoat the predominantly minority staffed DOC than go at the courts? Like I said you fell for the okie doke.

In the quote below I acknowledged that there are officers that are corrupt. It's a very small population of of officers and we literally celebrate when corrupt officers are brought down. Motherfuckers even cross the line and harass them on social media.... As far as broke I made almost 150K last year without breaking a sweat and i can literally retire when I'm 45. But I'm sure you're doing better than I am.

You're right I didn't point out the people who kept him there, however I did state what bothered ME, and you automatically assumed it was about the correction officers, when it was about the SYSTEM period. Then you start jumping up and down like they're lying on the jail and how it's ran.

If DOC officers are fucked up it is what is is, and again that's a problem, same as others law enforcement officers, but calling me slow and shit because of how I'm viewing what's presented to me makes me think you're one of the fuckups in there.
So no I didn't fall for shit but stop sneaking shit in there before you become an inmate Rick Ross.
BTW you foul as shit for coming at me sideways behind this.

The reason why he was in there so long is he didn't want to take the plea and walk around with that Felony forever. Also his bail got raised significantly after that and his family couldn't afford to bail him out.

The system is broken as whole. Kalief was not the first and will not be the last done wrong until a change is made.

that is not the reason he sat in jail so long. even with what you mentioned, regardless of you rejecting pleas You have the right to a speedy trial. It's called due process or due diligence. Why do you think their making a big deal of him being in there so long? due process was not done. no one should ever be in jail that long awaiting trial. if so, you think it would've made headlines? I'm speaking from experience. some bigger cities have a longer court list so sometimes the courts can't handle all cases fast enough and so you sit longer awaiting court dates but that's as far as it goes.

As i mentioned when you get arraigned in court they read you your rights and make you sign a waiver saying you understand. they will not proceed unless it's clear your informed of your rights and you understand them and they even give the you paperwork. did he read and understand his rights? obviously not cause sat in there 3 years acting like he had no clue of anything. to his credit he's young and this was his first go around with the law. and it's not uncommon to sit a year awaiting a trial to fight a case.

he probably waived his rights.
:itsawrap:
The Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees a defendant the right to a speedy trial

How long does it take to get a speedy trial?

In many jurisdictions, the prosecution generally has 60 to 120 days to bring an imprisoned defendant to trial unless the defendant waives the right to a speedy trial. The time period is generally longer for a defendant out of custody.

You live in NYC?

Read this brother. Kalief was one of 5700 felony cases in the Bronx alone that year. It's not about the due process, it's the wait

i understand that, i already stated you may sit longer because of case overload but that has nothing to do with your right to a speedy trial. do the math if more people were getting their speedy trial (due process) they wouldn't be sitting as long. they have so many cases cause their not getting people in and out of court. that's the whole purpose of due process get it? if every one is in and out of court within 2-4 months or released on bond you don't have 5700 cases. riddle that.

But they don't. That's what I'm trying to tell you. There's no real speedy process in NYC

that's the point I'm making to you, the process is there and the abuse of the system is a nationwide thing not just a ny thing. if you know your rights it's hard to pull the wool over your eyes but unfortunately jail is fun for most and their too busy playing cards, talking on phone, getting big store bags (jail balling) fighting trying to prove a rep than fighting and learning the law to get out.
