The Jena Six - Targets of Small Town Racism

Back in the day the NAACP would have been johnny-on-the-spot to ensure those boys' constitutional rights weren't violated. Where the fuck is our leadership? We better wake up from this weed and bling bling cloud of self absorbtion and recognize our situation. If a 130 mil can't save a Black man for killing his own dogs, what can the dirt poor do to protect themselves? As antiquated a concept as it is, we need a return to the protest and organization movement, and march en masse everywhere an injustice to our folks is revealed. Injustice needs to be an uncomfortable option for the oppressor.

You're your own leader. Why are you looking for Martin Luther King to come back down from the mountain top?

The NAACP is the people. So the NAACP will only be as strong as the people. Why don't you start a movement. Why don't you join the NAACP?

White people have made it to where we have turned on our leaders just like each other. Now Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have to be Santa Claus. They have to be involved in every problem in black america or people complain about the job they're doing. A problem occurs in Chicago. Where's Jesse? Something occurs in Washington. Where's Jesse? Last time I checked they aren't elected officials, we didn't vote for them...they do it because they want to and they are only one person. If they are involved. Ahhh, they are just after the spotlight. They should have been there earlier. They should have known about the situation before it even occurred. They should have prevented it. No win situation :smh:

Good question, what are these rappers doing with all that money they are making? They certainly are not doing anything worthwhile.

Where is David Banner?

The last part of this I agree with.

i went to high school in rural louisiana--the same kinda thing happened, just not to this extent--some a white dude called a group of black dudes niggas and he got the hell stomped out of him--they wanted to spin it by calling it a race riot, when it wasn't that--just 4 or 5 black dudes stomped out 2 white dudes (blacks do it to black all the time with no police involved)--they tried to press charges the same way--they'll never get these kinda convictions, its just a hick judge taking sides--louisiana is fulla shit, i think i'mma move to either dc or chitown before the year's end

My wife is from a little town in La. ans similar shit happened there. White kids took "ownership" of the McDonalds in town and tried to make it "white only". Some shit jumped off, fights broke out, the cops singled out the black kids and told them to stay on their side of town (the town is segregated and even has seperate black cops for the black side of town and an unofficial "black mayor". The high school has segregated proms and (for the most part) segregated classrooms. Before Super WalMart came into town, there was even seperate shopping areas.

But peep this...

This is the part that killed me...

THE TOWN PROSECUTOR CALLED AN ASSEMBLY AT THE SCHOOL AFTER ALL THE DRAMA AND THREATENED THE BLACK KIDS TO STOP MAKING TROUBLE "OR ELSE".

Just like in Jena. This shit is systematic.

I have seen some coverage but not enough. OK I can donate to the defense fund but what else. I don't feel like i am doing enough when I just donate money at things like this. This is some sad ruined my day shit. I have heard about it before but everytime i hear it I feel inadequate like there is something more I can do, but I just don't know what.

"Caseptla Bailey, NAACP President and mother of one of the accused"
The second post states that the mother of one of the accused is an NAACP president. No charges were filed against the white kids that jumped the young man at the party, but they want to imprison these young men because a white kid got beat down?

Sharpton calls for an end to Jena's double standards

JENA — Former presidential candidate the Rev. Al Sharpton denounced Sunday the criminal charges against six teenagers dubbed the "Jena Six," in a case that has stirred indignation across the board, but in particular among civil rights advocates.

"We cannot have two levels of justice," Sharpton told a mostly black crowd during a morning service at Trout Creek Baptist Church, where some 300 people packed the tiny church to hear his message.

"You cannot have some boys assault and charged with nothing, some boys hanging nooses and finish the school year and other boys charged with attempted murder and conspiracy. That's two levels of justice, and two levels of justice is an injustice," Sharpton said as the crowd cheered and clapped.

Sharpton is the first national civil rights leader to visit Jena to support the families of those involved in the case that has sparked racial tensions in the small LaSalle Parish town.

Sharpton said Martin Luther King III, son of the slain civil rights leader, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and members of the Black Congressional Caucus have expressed their intent to come to Jena as well.

The case, which caught the attention of hundreds of communities and national media outlets, reportedly began in September when Kenneth Purvis, a black student at Jena High School, received permission from the school's principal to sit underneath a tree that had been previously used only by white students.

The following day someone hung three hangman's nooses from the tree. A series of confrontations reportedly began in the days following. A fire also broke out Nov. 30 destroying the school's main building, although the cause of the fire is still unresolved.

The events are all too familiar to someone who has experienced Jim Crow laws, said Levi Stevenson, a Jena native who now lives in Houston and who came to support the youngsters. Stevenson is referring to laws that were enforced between 1876 and 1965 that kept a "separate but equal" status for black Americans.

"It doesn't seem like we have come too far. This is 2007 and you see that kids can't sit under a tree because it's someone else tree? That's unfair. This is unfair anytime," Stevenson said as he held a sign outside the church that read, "drop the charges! Sixth Amendment!"

Stevenson, 58, said the case brings sad memories for him, in particular because next to the church where he stood with his sign is the former Goodpine High School, where he graduated in 1967 during a time of segregation.

Prior to the church service, Sharpton visited the LaSalle Parish Courthouse jail where 17-year-old Mychal Bell sits awaiting sentencing. Bell is the only one of the Jena Six to go to trial, and he's awaiting a Sept. 20 sentencing hearing after being found guilty of aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit the same crime.

At the courthouse, Sharpton, Bell and Bell's parents, Melissa Bell and Marcus Jones, held a private meeting and prayed, Sharpton said.

"I told (Mychal), first he should thank God that his parents were standing up fighting," Sharpton said, adding that he learned about the case about four months ago.

Bell, who is also the only one of the Jena Six to have his charges reduced from attempted second-degree murder, was tried and convicted by an all-white jury.

Trial dates for the other five students — Robert Bailey Jr., Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis, Theo Shaw and an unidentified minor — are still pending. They face charges following a December fight at Jena High School that landed a white student, Justin Barker, in the hospital. Barker, who suffered a concussion, was released from the hospital the same day and reportedly later attended a school event.

Following the church service, Sharpton sharply critized LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters' prosecution of the case and encouraged government leaders and members of the community to take a stand against injustice by writing the U.S. Department of Justice and Gov. Kathleen Blanco. Walters did not return a phone call seeking comment Sunday.

"Gov. Blanco ought to be prepared to do whatever is necessary, if for some reason "» Mychal is not released" by a court hearing, said Sharpton, who added that the governor can then be petitioned for a special prosecutor to take over the remaining five cases. "The governor needs to know that the whole nation is watching her."

I'm glad he did. I will say this though, Where's Nancy Grace's usual ranting when some thing like this should be discussed. I guess since it's not a story to moreless bash a unfit mother she choses to not speak on it. It's as if the media has a gag order not to run the story. :smh:

Stop the Jena-cide!

JENA, La. (FinalCall.com) - On July 31, family members and hundreds of supporters of the “Jena 6” caravanned from across the country to stand in solidarity on the grounds of the LaSalle Parish Courthouse in Jena, La., to demand justice and freedom for the six young Black males: Mychal Bell, Robert Bailey, Theo Shaw, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis and Jesse Beard. Huge banners, handwritten signs, and raised fists covered the clear skies in the small town that has now drawn national attention.

“The Black students here are the ‘Rosa Parks’ of Jena because they decided to take a stand and say we are not going to take it any more,” stated rally moderator King Downing, the National Coordinator for the ACLU Campaign Against Racial Profiling.

“How many of us took a stand at 15 years old? These families have made sacrifices and are standing up,” Mr. Downing asked, and then announced that the “White tree” at Jena high School had been cut down the day before.

The rally opened with the penetrating sounds of the African drums, followed by the pouring of libations by Hannibal Afrik. Opening prayers and welcomes were made by Bishop Hall and Minister Lawrence Muhammad of Monroe, La., followed by words from the Jena 6 families.

“I love to see us all come together as a coalition because unity is what it’s all about,” stated Caseptla Bailey, the mother of Robert Bailey who is also being charged. She serves as the President of the newly-found NAACP LaSalle Parish Branch. “We thank everyone for their support and give a special thanks to those who have been with us from the beginning. I’m proud of those young men who stood up at the school.”

“This all started with those nooses. That’s the real problem,” stated Catrina Wallace, the secretary of the NAACP LaSalle Branch and step-sister of Robert Bailey. “It’s beautiful to see all of you out here to support us. “

Tina Jones, mother of Bryant Purvis, added “We are fighting for justice for our [youth] and it’s all about them.”

Standing in the place of her mother, Carwin Jones’ sister held back tears while expressing her family’s appreciation for the overwhelming support of her brother.

Melissa Bell and Marcus Jones, the parents of 17-year-old Mychal Bell, were also in attendance. Mr. Bell was convicted in June by an all-White jury of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery. Mr. Bell faces up to 22 years in prison and the remaining five still await trial. His trial date was originally set the same day as the rally, but due to the motions filed by his new defense Attorney Lewis Scott, it has been rescheduled for Sept. 20.

“We appreciate your support of Mychal, and you all stay with the fight,” said Ms. Bell. All of the families continue to declare that their sons are innocent.

“I’m overwhelmed right now, but the chant ‘Free Mychal Bell’ is alright with me!” said Mr. Jones with a fist in the air. He told The Final Call that a protest of this magnitude was the first in Jena history.

The chants continued as more and more people gathered on the lawn of the courthouse. More dynamic speakers came forward to send strong messages to the town’s law officials.

“We didn’t ask for this fight but we most definitely have accepted the challenge. We as Black people are no strangers to the concept of fighting for justice,” said Deric Muhammad, the Houston Millions More Movement Minister of Justice. The huge delegation from his city included Muhammad’s Mosque No. 45, the MMM-LOC, the Texas Coalition against the Death Penalty, and local media outlets seeking to cover the story.

“The job is not done because Mychal Bell is still incarcerated. We as men have to stand up.”

“Genocide is the systematic annihilation of a people. This American system targets our young Black men. So this is Jenacide!” stated Krystal Muhammad, Southern Representative of the New Black Panther Party. “This movement will continue and we will be back September 20.”

All of the speeches were punctuated by chants of “No Justice, No Peace,” “Stop the Jena-cide Now,” “Schools, Yes, Jails, No,” “Black Power,” and others.

Activist James Rucker of colorofchange.org read the petition that was signed by people from around the world in support of the Jena 6. To everyone’s applause, he announced that the number of signatures surpassed 45,000. The huge stack of petitions was delivered to the hands of the District Attorney J. Reed Walters in the courthouse foyer area. As protestors entered the courtroom, tension began to build up between them and law enforcement on site. Words were exchanged at times and strong messages given directly to the face of the District Attorney.

Jordan Flaherty, editor of Left Turn magazine, expressed “Thank you to The Final Call newspaper and others for putting this story back on the national scene!”

Mr. Flaherty, along with the show The Community Defender, was instrumental in breaking the story during its inception.

Everyone then lined up to march through downtown Jena to allow the cries of justice to resonate through the mostly segregated town, which is 85 percent White in population. Led by a police escort, the long stream of marchers walked several blocks before reconvening at the courthouse. Organizers called on everyone to prepare to return in even larger numbers for Mychal Bell’s sentencing date. Everyone agreed.

Others in attendance were Nation of Islam representatives from Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport, La.; Millions More Movement LOCs from Louisiana and Texas; N’COBRA; the Malcolm X Grassroots organization; The Community Defender; the ANSWER Coalition; and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

New defense for Mychal Bell

Attorney Scott took over the case when Mr. Jones reached out to him after seeing his son unjustly represented by Blaine Williams. “This is a traditional civil rights issue like the ’60s in the year 2007. Depriving a student the basic right to sit under a tree is sad,” stated Attorney Scott to The Final Call in a recent telephone interview.

“I took on this case because I was always focusing on the legal side of [it], so I filed for a motion for continuous so we can look into the legality of the proceedings that took place, examine whether any evidence was presented and other legal aspects,” he explained. “The average person would not be charged like this. The venue where the trial took place was definitely an unfair element to the case.”

He recently visited Mychal Bell in prison and told The Final Call that “Mychal Bell is cautiously optimistic.” Attorney Scott has also utilized the assistance of five other attorneys from Monroe.

No win situation :smh:

Just how exactly would my being my own leader benefit the Jena 6? I'm gonna be my own leader and go down there and do what? Simply because a person makes an observation about the lack of COMMUNITY leadership does not indicate that he fails to lead himself. Were those peeps who rallied with Malcolm not their own leaders simply because they followed Malcolm? Anyway, any effective leader needs to first know how to follow. Our leadership draws followers who in turn rise to leadership. A leader' s strength is a vestige of his follower's size and cohesiveness. There's room in this world for followers as well as leaders. What is one without the other?

That being said, these boys need the attention of leadership that can make a difference. As much as I might like to be that, me alone is not enough. I am man enough to admit that. I suppose that your singular leadership of yourself would be vastly more effective and useful, so maybe all they need is you. I'd put my money on a group effort, but maybe you're right and what they need is a bunch of individuals leading themselves. However, there are those who make a living and generate notoriety for themselves by claiming to be community leadership. I was merely speculating as to where they were, because these circumstances need attention from leadership that can make a difference.

You assume I wasn't speaking to our elected leadership. I didn't ask for Jesse or anyone else in particular. There are quite a few elected Black officials and leaders of commerce whose influence could be useful in Jena. You do know that there are Black elected officials, don't you? They competed for a position of leadership. I would think that anyone who has struggled to assume a position of leadership would see the need and come running. Aren't you wondering where they are?

Martin Luther King, Jr. is dead, sir. He has not removed himself to a mountaintop. Why make inflammatory statements when the circumstances beg for unity? Direct your animosity towards the bigotry that is the center of this controversy, not me my brother.

The NAACP is more than just a collection of people. The NAACP is a rich source of expertise on constitutional law and how it relates to the preservation of the rights of Black folks. I know this because I AM a member of the NAACP and have been since my days at Fisk. I pay my dues and support them financially. The NAACP has traditionaly been on the front line of the war to protect the rights of Black folks. I have noticed that their presence hasn't been as strong as it has been in the past. Haven't you?

Furthermore, I have started a movement. If we really want to be free of white oppression, we have to leave, so I have a plan that calls for all people who can claim to be a blood descendent of African slaves to expatriate themsleves from this country so we can form a separate nation. Then we can contract with Canada for some of its trackless wilderness, move there and create a Black utopian society. There's more to it, but thats the basics. I have difficulty finding people to take the idea seriously. Imagine what would happen if America experienced a brain drain of Black talent that concentrated in one place? A place free of the machinations designed to keep Black folks in a position inferior to those of ofays, generally speaking. My whole thing is, the window of opportunity for Black folks to achieve true equanimity with white folks in this country has passed. In fact, with trends like the loss of affirmative action in Michigan, and the blatant racism of Jenna, we are losing ground. I wouldn't be surprised to see the rise of a pre-civil rights type era if we aren't careful.

To close, the Jenna 6 need effective counsel, the support of accepted leadership of the national Black community from the church, commerce, politics, as well as private sector individuals like Jesse and AL. They need the physical presence of an informed Black community, and the pressure of the media. I've already sent money, and have spoken to my supervisors about possibly taking time off to move on Jenna. It would be better to focus on how to help these boys instead of criticizing the opinions and dialog of those who sympathize and only want to help.

2007...We are still N***as to them.

We out think them, out perform them.
We make them cheer when their teams win.
We have proven that we are their GOD's from antiquity in all aspects of human endeavour, but the heads of the European Empire still deceive, still give orders and still hate us for being us.

This truly is the Babylon system...

Blessings go out to the Jena 6.

[Respect to all the fellow contributors and those who make our point of view count]

Don't pay attention to the lack in the Black "Entertainment Industry" contribution. Their bank balances are constantly audited, so for them to be seen to help their own is to kick the teeth out of their career.

It's when we make these injustices clear and put them into the International arena are these issues truly heard; they didn't kill El Hajj Malik el-Shabazz for no other reason but to stop him going to the International Court of Justice(for our benefit) to take those responsible for unfair treatment to book.

I wonder if Obama REALLY wants anything to do with this???

Can we make these issues relevant to everyone we know or are you met with this... and a chuckle?
Less egotism and more unity is what once made Hip-Hop the most dominant force for nubian economic change, it's a pity it now has to be reborn from cooning we see today. (Don't worry, I'm prepared for the C Powells).

Strength in our community is only gained when we are allowed to function independantly...
