It's saying the logical approach would have been to had a charismatic rockstar ready for 2020. And doing both wasn't really an option. You can't keep taking L after L and not have it affect you.
What people never get is with each one of these scandals the right is doing the same shit they are. Sharing tweets from people who share their views. Posting from their talking heads. I somewhat agree, but I'm hopeful. We are heavily engaged on social media and immersed in this stuff, I don't think that's a major part of our country, tho. As far as what he has been able to get away with, we are up in arms or numb to it, but I think this is going to break through to the average person who sees newspaper headlines or who watches local news where they don't cover every sniff and snort Trump makes. A lot of Americans tune out politics unless it's election time or something blows up. For us, it's been non-stop campaigning, but most wouldn't normally tune in until Sept-Oct 2020.
