Thelonious Monk remains among the most challenging, provocative and disturbing figures in modern music. He has consistently been described in such terms for as long as he has been on the jazz scene - which is precisely as long as there has been modern jazz, for Monk of course was one of the principal molders of the new jazz. He will very probably continue to be described this way. For Monk's music is decidedly not designed for casual listening. Everything he writes and plays is jazz into which an important creative talent has put more than a little of himself. Thus, inevitably, Monk and his music demand the most difficult thing any artist can require of his audience - attention.​

Though I refuse to download Jazz ( I respect the music too much. Prefer to buy it.), I will say THANKS for introducing folks to Monk's music.

I'm reading this great book on Bud Powell now. Which I found laying around The GrandFather's house for a few months. And Monk is mentioned throughout...

Me. I just feel it's disrepectful. These Brothers (and Sisters) were so disrespected. Their craft wasn't so much honored until way after their deaths. They had to go to Europe to get kudos. And most made no money from their playing and recording.

I don't want to come off high-brow and shit. But this is OUR classical music. Making it America's as well. And we as Black folks need to hold on to these facts.

Being a Musician I very much appreciate your POV...I also see the PoV by the Brother that states some people would not be exposed to these Giants Music outside these kind of gifts......

Many of these Musicians survivors will never benefit from the ongoing record sales(only the Record companies and publishers).....of course there are exceptions

personally most of this music I have purchased more than once on vinyl as well as cd's.....perhaps for those really sympathetic should go out and purchase some more of these artist Music....it will probably be better quality anyway...most of these downloads are mp3 which while good most times are noticeably different than a CD....and definitely way less than aVinyl for those who still deal with Record Players.....

Anyway thanks for the drop...Lord knows The light needs to be shined on this great Music....and Monk is par excellent
