I've been lusting for big hair lately too. I don't have that much. Normally I go for a real conservative look, but I've been wanting wild and curly.

You can stretch it by banding. Or you can get the jumbo magnetic rollers and do a wash and set. When I don't want to blow dry I'll wash it and put it in 5 or 6 big twists or braids, then retwist a couple of times when dry. My hair straightens on it's own as I go along. Once it is straight enough I can wrap it around my head and use body heat to straighten further. You can flat iron, but the hair doesn't have to be bone straight for these styles, texture makes it look good. The one girl started with a braid out. If you blow dry make sure you use a heat protectant.
Loving it! And banding works. Lone you might have hair like my oldest. Sooo tight.

Banding:
Basically you lengthening the hair without heat by physically stretching it. Go get you a pack of Goody's bands. Chick on beadsbraidsandbeyond did a tutorial...but the brand she used I can't find. she described them as cloth covered.
2 books by the late, great Kevyn Aucoin. He was as gay as the day is long, but he was a makeup MASTER. If he hadn't died so young (He was almost 30), I wonder what else he would have put out. There is a third book as well, but I don't have it to download. I have the hard copies of these two somewhere, if you can find them locally, buy them, the .pdf's don't do them justice.
