The Earth just recorded its shortest day on record - and the effects could be ‘devastating’

The Earth completed a recent rotation in quicker time than ever before, and the consequences for how we keep time have scientists alarmed.

Earth recorded its shortest day on record on June 29, completing one rotation in 1.59 millisecond under 24 hours.

Scientists aren’t exactly sure what is causing the slightly faster rotation, but speculate it could be linked to climate change, tides, or even the Earth’s layers.

Irregular rotations create the need for something known as a leap second, a second added to the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) that keeps our clocks as close to solar time - the movements of the sun - as possible.

So far, Earth’s rotation has been largely slowing over time, so only positive leap seconds have been added to atomic clocks to keep up, but it was just revealed that on June 29, the Earths’ rotation was recorded spinning faster than normal.

“If Earth’s fast rotation continues, it could lead to the introduction of the first-ever negative leap second,” a story published on the timeanddate website warned.

A negative leap second is a second taken away from atomic clocks.

“This would be required to keep civil time—which is based on the super-steady beat of atomic clocks—in step with solar time, which is based on the movement of the Sun across the sky.

“A negative leap second would mean that our clocks skip one second, which could potentially create problems for IT systems,” the timeanddate story said.

Meta said in a blog post late last month a negative leap second could have a “devastating effect”.

That’s in part because some technological systems have a baked-in assumption that time only moves forward.

These IT systems are likely to suffer massive outages if their internal clocks ever need to move backwards to compensate for an irregularly fast rotation of the Earth.

Earth recorded its shortest day on Friday, but the effect of correcting clocks to compensate could have a ‘devastating effect’ on IT systems.

“The impact of a negative leap second has never been tested on a large scale; it could have a devastating effect on the software relying on timers or schedulers,” Meta said.

Meta said the UTC had been altered 27 times already with positive leap seconds, and also argues this is more than enough to last the millennium - calling for an end to adding leap seconds.

“Introducing new leap seconds is a risky practice that does more harm than good, and we believe it is time to introduce new technologies to replace it,” the post said.

In 2012, Reddit was inaccessible for up to 40 minutes after an outage caused by a leap second which confused the system’s timer.

“The leap second and the offset it creates cause issues all over the industry,” Meta wrote.

Why does it happen?
A group of scientists - Leonid Zotov, Christian Bizouard and Nikolay Sidorenkov - believe the irregular rotations are caused by something called the Chandler Wobble.

They will be speaking at this week’s annual Asia Oceania Geosciences Society meeting to suggest this theory.

The Chandler wobble describes an irregular movement of Earth’s geographical poles across the surface of the globe, according to timeanddate.

“The normal amplitude of the Chandler wobble is about 3m to 4m at Earth’s surface,” Zotov told timeanddate, “but from 2017 to 2020 it disappeared.”

The melting and refreezing of ice caps on the world’s tallest mountains could be contributing, and the phenomenon can be visualised by imagining a spinning figure skater slowing down when their arms are outstretched and speeding up as their arms are tucked in.

Friday’s record-breaking time is just one of several speed records set for Earth since 2020.

The Earth is, over long periods of time, actually slowing down - it takes a couple of milliseconds longer to complete its rotation each century.

Zotov told timeanddate that there’s a “70 per cent chance” we’re already at the minimum length of a day and won’t need to introduce a negative leap second, but nobody knows for sure.

I don't know what it means, but it seems like the Earth is throwing us off.
What I keep saying they spoke about all of this years ago and people didn’t listen now some of it is happening and people are starting to realize oh shit….nope it’s too late. Earth is a living being if it feels threatened it’s going to defend itself.

If the world would expurgate white people, thank you Joe Clark, the world would live another million years. They are everything that's wrong with this planet. It might not be all of them, but the corporations especially, and they own most of the corporations

Throughout their history all they do is destroy. They don't cultivate anything. They don't respect the land they're living on and they think resources will just go on forever

I'm not anti-science but the Earth spinning 1.59 millisecond faster in 24 hours doesn't fill me with dread. :hmm:

Yeah, its something but not sure if its the biggest thing to worry about and even if we did worry, not sure there is a damn thing we can do about it....now these fucking heat waves and people dying all over the place due to heat strokes, well that is a clear indication that something is going on and it aint good

seems trivial i know, but this shit is no bueno. just like the core temperature of the earth moving by 1.59 degrees. but they dont do a good job of explaining so everybody shrugs

Don't quite understand your point about the Earth's core. Are you saying it's rising? By how much??? That would concern me much more than the Earth spinning on its axis 1.59 second faster in 24 hours.

i doubt if it gives a shit about us..

shit goes in cycles whether we are here of not.

How do y'all get on the INTERNET on computers that fit in your pocket to say science is bullshit?

Science has not proven if it's flat or round. Prove either one and I'll be happy.

Layers of the earth is just a theory. They haven't measured anything.

It's not all bad tho!
Science has taught me air is a fluid and the moon is in earths atmosphere.

Earth does go through cycles but those cycles more rough with some of the shit we are doing to the environment

Scientists just be saying shit when their funding is in question. We dnt give AF about 1.59 milliseconds. If it's not a trend then they can keep the info.
Nah man you're wayyyyyyy off on this one... That 1.59 milliseconds definitely seems minimal, but is noteworthy... That could possibly throw off calculations of satellites points, asteroid tracking, etc... The way they programmed the Webb Satellite its positioned between the Earth and the Sun and is suppose to remain in that position as we rotate around the Sun, any change could greatly alter the desired results... The speed of things in space is incomparable to what we see on Earth, so a fraction of a second is definitely an eye raiser...

In a nutshell, pretty much... We live on a floating rock of living matter that's been here for longer than we can imagine... I'm all into space and the study of it... I was hooked as a kid once I wrapped my mind around the concept that on Earth there's about an 8minute delay of the light from the Sun...

That's why you have to read the article ron, it seemingly doesn't affect you, but it's possible ramifications on things are what's the possible problem...... the earth temperature rising 1-2 degrees most likely doesn't alarm you till you see what that seemingly small amount is doing to the polar ice caps

I know what you're saying. The Earth is earthing.

That it may be, but mankind, particularly the Caucasian persuasion is a cancer to the Earth and its destruction of its resources and overall life and population.

I mean somebody created covid-19 in a lab for Christ sakes. They created a new disease.

When I watch movies about like jaws and Lake placid. I'm always rooting for the animal to take out the people. I'm kind of rooting for the Earth in this case. I honestly don't give human beings as we currently exist another 100 years on this planet
