The article is spot on. I love Android, but Google is allowing the telcos to fuck up what's so beautiful about it. Why the fuck are some people waiting six months to a year for an upgrade because some stupid ass company just has to put their worthless skin on the OS? That's why the Droid was so successful, because it was just the raw OS. Now the bloatware is starting to get ridiculous and other restrictions are slowly creeping into Android (AT&T not allowing software outside the market, Motorola locking phone bootloaders, telcos blocking tethering even though it's free in the OS....though that's to be expected, etc.) The worst is manufacturers phasing out/not updating phones. Say what you want about Apple, they support/update their hardware back to the first iPhone. Even if they can't enable every feature on old hardware they give it the newest OS.
It'll be hard for Google to restore order (if they even care to) because of the nature of open source, but they have enough power to entice the companies to fly right.
