Two reasons.

(1) Her studies only covered "whites" and "white" consumption patterns.

(2) The "middle class" is a uniquely "white" phenomenon in this country.

For slave descendants or African-Americans, our wealth distribution probably reflects Mexico, more than anything. There was a burgeoning middle class in the 60s, but that's basically gone now.

If middle class defines wealth, slave descendants have none, only debt.
