This was an excellent post and challenge. I got the first one right and the second one wrong but I learned something..

I am exactly as smart as I thought I was.

" ... link the chains in a closed loop" = a loop that is closed.

In order to link a chain you have to first open the link and then close the link ... to form a closed loop.

Oh, I get it now. I was just trying to close them. Didn't think I had to open them and then close them again.
