The Browns, finally, are tired of Johnny Manziel.
In a statement released early Tuesday afternoon, new Browns executive director of football operations Sashi Brown addressed the latest early morning incident that included an altercation between Manziel and his girlfriend and a police helicopter searching for Manziel in the Dallas area.
“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field,” the statement said. “Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Translation: Manziel’s two years of embarrassing the Browns are about over.
Manziel could be released as early as next week, and though there are potential salary cap reasons that could delay it, it’s hard to imagine the remade (again) Browns keeping Manziel on the roster once March comes and the new league year begins.
The NFL is investigating last weekend’s incident. Tuesday’s statement comes five days after Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said he thought the team’s relationship with Manziel could be fixed.
