The Bevel Trimmer promises a sharper, cleaner haircut for people of color

When it comes to style, getting edged up (or having sharp lines shaved into the edges of a haircut) can be incredibly important for people with coarse hair — and particularly for people of color. It's that last bit of detail that makes a new cut look correct. The unfortunate thing is that the trimmers needed for this one aspect of haircutting can be both ugly and filthy. Walker & Company, the startup behind the Bevel shaving kit, went ahead and designed a new kind of trimmer that's meant to be cleaner and easier to use at home and at the barbershop.

"I’ve been using the same kinds of trimmers for the last 15 years, and I hate every one of them," Tristan Walker, CEO of Walker & Company, told The Verge. "You go to any kind of barbershop. The barbers are really using the same trimmers every other barber is using. We set out to make what we believe is the most advanced trimmer on the planet."

The sleek new Bevel Trimmer spent a year in development, and is designed around power, comfort, and cleanliness. The device is ergonomic, allowing its owner to shave with improved precision. It also comes with water- and oil-resistant blades that are easily adjusted and replaced. That's key; dirty blades carry bacteria that can lead to razor bumps and irritation. Finally, the Trimmer works both plugged and unplugged, and has four hours of battery life.

The Bevel Trimmer is Walker & Company's second major product after the original Bevel, which aimed to improve shaving for men and women of color. Since it launched in early 2014, the product's popularity has only grown; though the company doesn't release sales figures, Walker claims 95 percent of its customers come back. That enthusiasm led to a $24 million round of funding last fall, as well as a deal to sell the kit in select Target stores.

Walker & Company isn't done releasing new products this year. The startup plans on launching several over the course of 2016, including a line developed expressly for women. The Bevel Trimmer is now available for preorder for $179.95, and will hit stores this spring.

I'd be on this if it the trimmer blade was detachable and maybe an adjustable blade could be attached and this could be an all in one set like a combo outliner and Andis Master. I'll wait and see.

I guess he's looking for high income users... Apple style. T-outliner is only $50 and gets the job done well... that's why damn near everyone uses it.

I hope he comes out with some skin care products. My brother shaves with the Bevel razor and really likes the oil and restoring balm.

Not any bigger than an outliner... how small would you want it?

Looking for something the size of those Wahl 5 star professional outliners. I got the T blade version right now. Gonna have to take a closer look at the blades then, didn't see that straight on pic when I glanced at the website.

$179.95 for a trimmer? $89.50 for a shaving set??? Because Nas endorses it?
I could buy all five of these, make a donation to the NAACP and still save money!

Going to definitely check this out in the near future.

Been rocking w/ the Andis Outliner since I was in my early 20s, so hopefully his r&d is comparable

You subscribe to the homey discount huh?

Sticker shock. Understandably so considering it is an unknown vs the known and tested. Is it worth almost 4x the outliner? We shall see.

I bought the razor set for my brother and he feels like it's worth it even though it is expensive compared to Gilette or whatever. He's kept the subscription going.

he should look to stay close to the Andis outliner price tag. I am all about supporting black business but not if it doesnt make financial sense.

Agreed

Cosign, I'd be down if it was $80-$100. I'll be waiting to hear how it performs and then I might buy it.

yeah if it is a superior product then by all means ill pay a little more for it but he is asking more than 3x the price of a product with decades of proven performance.

the barber makes the clippers the clippers don't make the barber. if your barber ain't shit the best clippers in the world are not going to give you a better cut
Very true. But the entrepreneur is Black so I'm supporting with my money.

love the idea, but his consumer is the dude who already is saving money by not going to the barber 2-4 times a month. I have had the same clippers and trimmer since 05-06. Just change the blades. I think I paid 140 for both back then. Inflation is a motherfucker. But 180.00 just for trimmers ain't happening.

Just noticed the bevel website. That shave kit is 19.95 per month. For just the creams and shit.

I am all for supporting this brother, but I'll be damned if I pay an exorbitant premium to do so. I shave my face once a week, that kit would last me a damn year. The "Art Of Shaving" unscented line is 60 but I get to buy it when I feel like... Every 8 months.

I'll let you brothers take the plunge first, that cone with that BGOL review. My outliners are like 12 years old, my Masters are like 4. Used about every 4 days and not 1 problem... He's up against allot of quality products with outstanding reputations. At that price you can get some Oster 76ers, which I hear are tanks...

Well he can't sell barbers so clippers will have to do

at 180 bucks who is his target audience then? Is this intended for at home use to shape up the beard and such in between visits to the barber?

I wouldnt pay that much for an untested brand of clippers that I know won't shave my face as close as a razor will.

Completely unrelated, but how the hell is Nas not aging?
Brother looks mid-20's crisp. Hair and hairline still in good shape too.

A little pricey for the casual consumer but i will wait on a few reviews and buy if they are remotely good.
They are, but I cannot overstress the importance of paying for good clippers.
I spent years making the mistake of buying drugstore brand Conaires and Wahls. After a year of use they'd begin making that horrible, deafening BUZZING noise ... a few months later they would be dead.
Had enough and spend $250 on a set of Oyster Turbo 111's, Andis Masters, and Andis Ts. 20 years later, outside of occasional blade replacement, I have only had to replace the T's body once.

Yeah. It's sticker shock. It looks really good, but that's a decent amount of bread.

looks really good ,but not 180 good. got too many good 40 -50 dollar clippers that do a great job for that price. might could pay 100 for em .

The list is too much for the individual imo, every one is reaching for the high end exclusive market. Have the well to do hype it and let working class people over spend to be apart of the "high end" like alcohol and smartphones. That price tag ain't for me, wish his company well though

I would support with that price-tag but they would have to be as good or more crisp than my T-Outliners which I have had for years, still putting in excellent work even after a few nice drops and a couple chips. A plus is that they're cordless, hopefully the power sustains while they're unplugged for that 4 hours.

And yeah, it looks like Nas is living stress free to some extent.

What makes them better?

Only thing I don't like about outliners is adjusting them to the t can be a muthafuka.
If they were more easily adjustable or self adjust, I'd be a buyer
