Quarry from '67-'71 was the best all around fighter of this group, by the mid seventies Quarry was in decline.

Norton stopped a faded Quarry, won a split decision over Young in a close fight, and was stopped in the 1st by Shavers. His inability to compete with big punchers drops him below Quarry.

Young lost a close fight with Norton, won two unanimous decisions over Lyle, and was stopped early in his career by Shavers. Easily the best defensive fighter of the group as well as one of the best defensive heavies of all time but his lack of pop puts him third in this group.

Lyle and Shavers are almost interchangeable but Lyle gets the slight edge because of better stamina and surviving an early knockdown to come back and stop Shavers in their head to head meeting.

Shavers has stoppage wins over Norton and Young but he was stopped by Quarry and Lyle. By all accounts was the hardest puncher in the group as well as one of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history but his lack of stamina and porous defense puts him last on this list.

Ken Norton over Ernie Shavers??? C'mon, Shavers was the hardest hittin' heavyweight of the 70's and that includes Foreman. Ali even said the hardest punch he ever received was from Shavers and the most awkward fighter he faced was Norton. Ken Norton's major claim to fame was that he won a split decison over Ali in their first fight, that's it. :hmm:

I take umbrage to you calling Earnie Shavers and Ken Norton second tier heavyweights. Ken Norton was a champ. Although Shavers wasn't a champ, he was a feared opponent.

Norton didn't win his title in the ring he was awarded his championship when Leon Spinks decided to fight Ali instead of Norton. To be fair Norton would've beaten Spinks. Still he didn't actually beat anyone to be champion and didn't make any successful defenses of his title. Shavers was a feared opponent but the key word is opponent and that's just what Shavers was. Shavers fought for a championship three times and loss all three times.

Still, those men are first tier fighters. I bet you any money you would say that to their faces in a dark alley.
