The Attack on Obama's Character

Obama's 'Weatherman' Connection

"William Ayers, in the age of terrorism, will be Barack Obama's Willie Horton."
--Former counterterrorism official Larry C. Johnson, The Huffington Post, Feb. 16, 2008.

There has been a sudden spate of blog items and newspaper articles, mainly in the British press, linking Barack Obama to a former member of the radical Weather Underground Organization that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, now holds the position of distinguished professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Although never convicted of any crime, he told the New York Times in September 2001, "I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough."

Both Obama and Ayers were members of the board of an anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002. In addition, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama's re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate in April 2001, as reported here. They lived within a few blocks of each other in the trendy Hyde Park section of Chicago, and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles.

Is there anything here that raises questions about Obama's judgment or is this just another example of guilt by association?
The Facts

The first article in the mainstream press linking Obama to Ayers appeared in the London Daily Mail on February 2. It was written by Peter Hitchens, the right-wing brother of the left-wing firebrand turned Iraq war supporter, Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens cited the Ayers connection to bolster his argument that Obama is "far more radical than he would like us to know."

The Hitchens piece was followed by a Bloomberg article last week pointing to the Ayers connection as support for Hillary Clinton's contention that Obama might not be able to withstand the "Republican attack machine." Larry Johnson, a former counterterrorism official at the CIA and the State Department, predicted that the Republicans would seize on the Ayers case, and other Chicago relationships, to "bludgeon Obama's presidential aspirations into the dust."

The London Sunday Times joined the chorus this weekend by reporting that Republicans were "out to crush Barack by painting him as a leftwinger with dubious support".

The only hard facts that have come out so far are the $200 contribution by Ayers to the Obama re-election fund, and their joint membership of the eight-person Woods Fund Board. Ayers did not respond to e-mails and telephone calls requesting clarification of the relationship. Obama spokesman Bill Burton noted in a statement that Ayers was a professor of education at the University of Illinois and a former aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley, and continued:

Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous.

In the short term, the person who has most to gain by speculation about Obama's acquaintance with a former terrorist is Hillary Clinton. The former First Lady likes to present herself as "tested and vetted" after years of exposure to Republican attacks, in contrast to Obama, a relative newcomer to hardscrabble presidential politics. Such arguments resonate with Johnson, the counterterrorism expert, who told me that he is a Clinton supporter, although not involved with the campaign.

But the Obama-Ayers link is a tenuous one. As Newsday pointed out, Clinton has her own, also tenuous, Weatherman connection. Her husband commuted the sentences of a couple of convicted Weather Underground members, Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans, shortly before leaving office in January 2001. Which is worse: pardoning a convicted terrorist or accepting a campaign contribution from a former Weatherman who was never convicted?

Whatever his past, Ayers is now a respected member of the Chicago intelligentsia, and still a member of the Woods Fund Board. The president of the Woods Fund, Deborah Harrington, said he had been selected for the board because of his solid academic credentials and "passion for social justice."

"This whole connection is a stretch," Harrington told me. "Barack was very well known in Chicago, and a highly respected legislator. It would be difficult to find people round here who never volunteered or contributed money to one of his campaigns."

The Pinocchio Test

The question is not whether a connection can be established between Barack Obama and a former member of the Weathermen, but whether it has any significance for the 2008 presidential campaign. Could Bill Ayers become a political embarrassment for Obama? Let me know what you think.

Palin Says Obama 'Palling Around' With Terrorists

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=5954920

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on Saturday accused Democrat Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists" because of an association with a former '60s radical, a harsh attack on his character that she repeated at three separate campaign events without substantiation.

Desperate McCain gets tough with attack on Obama’s character

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4882402.ece

As the Democrat builds a lead in key states, the Republicans are trying to fight back by focusing on his ties to a corrupt donor.

FACED with the threat of a decisive victory for Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, his Republican rival John McCain is preparing to take the gloves off and “get tough” in the closing weeks of an increasingly aggressive election campaign.

The McCain camp has already launched a series of negative advertisements attacking Obama’s character and associates. They are being shown in battleground states that are tilting towards the Democratic senator.

look, since Obama has not been in politics too long(and don't claim that community organizer bullshit) you must look at his character. You can't just trust a guy who promises the world but he just doesn't know how expensive that may be.

He said he has attended Reverend Wright's sermons for 20 years. If there are 52 weeks in the year and if he attended every Sunday that is 1040 times he saw Wright. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he attended half of them, 520 Sundays. If each sermon was an hour long thats over 21 and a half days full of his sermons. He later goes on to say that "I could no longer disown Wright than I could disown the black community." When people actually get to see some of Wright's sermons, Obama runs out to disown Wright and says he has never heard those words before. :smh: This is a blatant lie, you are trying to tell me that in 20 years you never heard any of this?! Now Im not saying that Obama is unpatriotic but this is a sketchy affiliation.

Obama's Fight The Smears website used to say that McCain was lying about Obama having ties to ACORN but once the media found out that there is a tie to Obama and ACORN, the website quickly took it down. More lies.

I love the future we face with Obama, you question him and him, Biden, and the media rips you to pieces. Look at Joe the plumber, I know more about his backround than Obama's. They have completely ripped this dude to pieces because he asked a question and Obama fucked up. I remember when Palin got asked by a kid about Palestine, when she fucked up they ripped Palin a new asshole and let the kid go. By the way, that kid supports Obama, but I guess thats ok. (He was interviewed on CNN but I can't find the vid.) But how come that kid was inspected under a miroscope?

Obama has no record of change and can only say he will do this, but he cannot say "I have done this...". He really does not know what he is getting into.:itsawrap:

All your doing is spewing Talking Points that have already been debunked. The same shit your saying now is the same shit FOX NEWS have been saying over and over without REALIZING that MOST of this INFORMATION has already been DEBUNKED! A Few Months ago, you had no idea what ACORN was, A Few Years ago you had no idea who Jeremiah Wright was. Would you really like me to show you where John McCain voted 90% of the time with George W Bush?

FACT CHECK.

look, since Obama has not been in politics too long(and don't claim that community organizer bullshit)

FALSE. Obama has been in Politics for almost 11 years. He was first an Illinois State Senator from 1997-2004 and then later a US Senator from 2004-Now

you must look at his character. You can't just trust a guy who promises the world but he just doesn't know how expensive that may be.

John McCain is doing the same thing. What is your point?

He said he has attended Reverend Wright's sermons for 20 years. If there are 52 weeks in the year and if he attended every Sunday that is 1040 times he saw Wright. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he attended half of them, 520 Sundays. If each sermon was an hour long thats over 21 and a half days full of his sermons. Now Im not saying that Obama is unpatriotic but this is a sketchy affiliation.

FACT CHECK: You mean when Rev. Wright was speaking on a US Conspiracy to kill off Black People or how America is Damned? Rev Ron Parsley, Jerry Fallwell, John Hagee and Pat Roberton believes in a Similar theories and they all endorsed John McCain. No One Is Perfect.

Obama's Fight The Smears website used to say that McCain was lying about Obama having ties to ACORN but once the media found out that there is a tie to Obama and ACORN, the website quickly took it down. More lies.

FACT CHECK
Obama has ties to ACORN, but so do many Republicans, This has been public knowledge. He was an ACORN lawyer in the mid-1990's. but Obama had nothing to do with the voter registration fraud thats happening NOW.

I love the future we face with Obama, you question him and him, Biden, and the media rips you to pieces. Look at Joe the plumber, I know more about his backround than Obama's. They have completely ripped this dude to pieces because he asked a question and Obama fucked up. (He was interviewed on CNN but I can't find the vid.) But how come that kid was inspected under a miroscope?

The Reason you know more about Joe the Plumber is because you have never researched Obama's back ground. What do you know about Joe The Plumber? Who is his wife? How many kids does he have? What Church does he Attend? Does he pay Taxes? How much money did he earn Last year? The Problem with Joe the Plumber is that he went on the Offensive not thinking a Defensive would be used against him. Now The Media does the same with Barack Obama. I know you watch Fox News. Sean Hannity had a show called Hannitys America. He also has Hannity and Colmbs. On Both these High Rated Shows, he Rips Obama apart. The Problem? Most of his Theories have been Disproved. When people Spread LIES, the TRUTH REARS its BEAUTIFUL HEAD. Lucky for Obama, the LIES of the Opposition Outweigh Their TRUTH.

Obama has no record of change and can only say he will do this, but he cannot say "I have done this...". He really does not know what he is getting into.:itsawrap:

OBAMA has no Record of Change? Being against the Policies and Ideologies of George Bush is the Change to Come.

But if you really want to know what Obama has done in the past, then read this. Its too Much to lay out.

What will John McCain do.
Let you KEEP your TAX MONEY?
PROTECT YOU FROM "TERRORIST"
McCAIN wont FIX the ECONOMY because he said it himself, he does not know much about the ECONOMY
McCAIN wont WIN THE WAR on TERROR because THERE is no WAR ON TERROR. It's a WAR for OIL. If 9-11 is the Biggest FEAR you have in the world, then you have nothing to FEAR but FEAR itself because MORE PEOPLE DIE in CAR ACCIDENTS then they do in BOMBINGS.

it amazes me how people try to have it both ways in order to create an excuse to label or discredit obama

how can he be a muslim.....then be criticized for his association for rev wrights church

this election has shown me how ignorant people really are:smh:

Wow what does "A Few Months ago, you had no idea what ACORN was, A Few Years ago you had no idea who Jeremiah Wright was." have anything to do with this argument? A couple of years ago, I had no understanding of the economy, but I studied and read numerous books on it to understand it. Knowledge is power and when things I don't understand or know of come up, I look them up and read about it. So lets now get to the actual debate:

1st of all I never said in that post I am voting for John McCain, but nice try. I am leaning is his favor though b/c Im not going for Obama and have a slight bit more faith in McCain but only slight.

2nd, Obama is promising all these programs but does he really have a past record of doing this...no. Its very simply logic, anyone can promise you all this shit but few can actually deliver on their promises. To make it fair for all you McCain haters, I don't really believe it that much from him either but he has been at the federal govt longer than Obama so he should have a better understanding of the way things work at the federal level. Obama is also promising bipartisanship, but really has no history of this. Words mean nothing, show me actions. That is my point.

3rd, maybe you should do some research b/c McCain has denounced Parsley's endoresment
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/05/mccain-rejects.html

Jerry Fallwell is dead and McCain has shown in the past that he doesn't approve some of Fallwell's and Robertson's views
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0002/28/se.01.html
I have not found any articles stating that Robertson endorsed McCain, just that Robertson endorsed Rudy Giuliani.
But to be fair he has also said good things on them.

McCain also denounced John Hagee's endorsement
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/22/mccain.hagee/?iref=hpmostpop

There is no 20 year history of McCain attending any of these guys' churches. Obama has the history with Wright. Also Obama said Wright was a member of his family and when people saw some of the vids he denounced Wright. He stated he never saw any of this...that is a lie. I find it very hard to believe that he never heard ANY of those statements from Wright. The mathematical odds of not hearing those statements are very low, but maybe, just maybe luck was on his side.

The racist comment by that guy was fucked up, but I really have no faith in Keith Olberman. The guy is a prick and talks as much bullshit as Hannity does. I would much rather watch the whole speech that guy made as opposed to a PMSNBC and Olberman edited video.

I never said Obama had something to do with ACORN and its voter registration fraud becuase I know he doesn't. But saying on his website that Obama does not have any ties to ACORN is a lie. The issue isn't about other Republicans with ties to ACORN but Obama saying that he has NO ties to ACORN.

I did research Obama's backround (and not from wikipedia:lol:) and is not a backround I like in a candidate. The problem is not everyone has done their research on him. People look to the media for an unbiased approach but there is none. The media did more work ripping Joe to pieces. I don't care "What do you know about Joe The Plumber? Who is his wife? How many kids does he have? What Church does he Attend? Does he pay Taxes? How much money did he earn Last year?" because he is NOT running for PRESIDENT. All he did was ask a question. "The Problem with Joe the Plumber is that he went on the Offensive not thinking a Defensive would be used against him." All he did was ask a question. Should every American who asks a candidate a question be ripped to pieces by the media? NO because everyone has the right in America to ask the candidate's positions from their elected officials.

By investigating Joe it took the heat off Obama's fuck up. So in turn people who rely on the media for information on the candidates hear all this shit about Joe. It doesn't matter who the question came from, it matters what the answer is. But to be fair, I think the kid who asked Palin the question on Palestine should be investigated as heavily as Joe.

I watch Fox News as much as I watch CNN. When I hear things on either network that catches my ear, I look it up to see if it is actually true.

And QueEx, Obama does not realize that if you increase taxes on Big Business, then this is less money those businesses will invest in the market. With the market doing this shitty, lessening the funds flowing in the market will only drive it down.

Also many businesses are laying off employees because of bad business and low revenues. By increasing taxes on them, they will lay off more workers b/c they will have even lower revenues. Since they cannot get rid of the tax expeses, they can get rid of payroll expeses aka employees.

On top of that, Obama plans to increase taxes on oil and gas companies to speed up their efforts to increase development of renewable technologies and to get the companies to wean off their dependence on oil. Problem is, you can't control how a company puts taxes on goods, i.e. they will just pass the tax onto consumers by increasing prices. Pick up a book and read on the economy, you might learn something.

I get it. Your White and your Bitter!
