That Moment When Black Twitter Learns John Travolta Was Almost ‘The Kid’ In Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’

Every day, we’re reminded that Black Twitter holds a wealth of knowledge. In today’s episode of “I Was Today Years Old,” one Twitter user presented the prompt, “In the mood for some random Black industry facts. What y’all got for me?” Journalist and author, Michael Harriott, replied with a jaw-dropping tidbit that could easily have been a question on Jeopardy.

“This black singer had an idea for a movie called ‘Dreams’ but the singer’s OWN LABEL wanted a white actor to play the lead,” he began. “The singer refused. So they gave the singer a tiny ‘black film’ budget, gave him the role (instead of John Travolta) & changed the title to [what we now know as] Purple Rain.”

formation, this isn’t the first time this fact has surfaced. In April 2016, a week after Prince’s untimely death, a conversation with Albert Magnoli—director of Purple Rainsurfaced in Rolling Stone about the singer’s “cinematic breakthrough.”

Magnoli revealed that the film was being passed up by countless directors, but he convinced Prince that he was the one needed to convey his story in its visual manner. Initially, Prince and his management team were equally footing $500,000 to fund the film, but when it made its way to Warner Bros., their first request was to cast John Travolta.

Magnoli recalled, “I said to the Warners guys, ‘Guys, this is not going to happen. This is unacceptable. What we have going for us is authenticity.’ They were shocked. I said, ‘Next question.'” Even Apollonia teased, “I love John, but I don’t think—in high heels and Jheri curl and purple velvet, I don’t think that would’ve worked.”

cept. I’m saying, ‘No, it’s an R. It’s a brutal story with a lot of darkness in it.'”

Though they continued to nitpick the 1984 film (even as it began making rounds with theater screenings), its soundtrack garnered two Oscar wins, earned over $70 million in box office sales, and catapulted Prince’s career. During its opening week, the crooner became the first artist to simultaneously have a No. 1 album, single, and film in the country, reported to Rolling Stone.

There are varying reports that Richard Pryor wanted to produce Purple Rain, but former football player and Hall of Famer Jim Brown felt Prince was too feminine for his liking—as shared in the 2013 documentary, Richard Pryor: Omit The Logic. However, others say that Brown didn’t pass on the film, but Pryor, rather, lowballed the funding.

Either way, Purple Rain is now streaming on HBO Max. Watch the trailer below.

I have known the majority of the info in the article for quite some time now. What I hadn't heard was "There are varying reports that Richard Pryor wanted to produce Purple Rain, but former football player and Hall of Famer Jim Brown felt Prince was too feminine for his liking—as shared in the 2013 documentary, Richard Pryor: Omit The Logic. However, others say that Brown didn’t pass on the film, but Pryor, rather, lowballed the funding." Tbh, that part doesnt make sense to me becuz initially they are talking about Richard Pryor, but they conclude with Jim Brown. I mean make it make sense.

Maybe it was gonna be joint producers.. sometimes multiple people get together to fund a project..if 1 don’t agree than sometimes things fall apart

Ok, that could be it. Article should have tied them together in that case. It almost looks as if it was a typo from left field.
I feel you.. only reason I know that joint producer thing is cause of dealings with the industry..outsider people wouldn’t know and you are correct and they should make themselves clearer and not assume people know about joint ventures

It's crazy how this new generation has so much near unlimited access but still don't know.

Well, this isnt exactly "must know" information, but I get what ur saying. Today's public chooses too be ignorant. Too caught up in Tik Tok, the latest dance challenge, twerkin, drug culture, degrading music and pure foolishness.

That's my point.

I'm saying of course it's not common knowledge but these new kids swear they are fans...

But they are not.

They don't know the history

I see it all the time especially in the comic book movie threads

If you a Prince fan you knew this.

It's like knowing will Smith was supposed to be Neo, Tom Selleck was going to be Indiana Jones, etc etc.

It's if you call yourself a fan geek etc and don't really know sh*t

One of my professors in school told us yesterday that he has several colleagues (all Black men) who have written screenplays. And, if the establishment feels that the screenplays are any good, they always try to change the main male character into a white male if he's a Black male.

This is nuts... :dunno:

There's a difference between casual fans and stans though. Prince makes great music and many people listen to him on the strength of that alone but don't care about winning a Prince trivia contest.

They're fans in the sense that they enjoy his stuff not that they know every fact about him.

I think Jim Brown was acting as a advisor for alot of black celebrities back then. I know he was advising Ali around the same time too.

I I'm a fan of Prince, not a super fan, but I'm a fan and I didn't know about the Prince John Travolta thing. Someone earlier stated that white people are always trying to turn black characters into white characters because they claim it for marketing, but the fact is they want to see more white faces instead of black ones, particularly when it comes to males

On the fact that this generation has so much information but still know nothing, the man has flooded the world with so much ridiculous and pointless content that anything good falls to the bottom of the pool

It's like how video games can distract creative people into playing those video games and not working on their craft. Same thing for movies, Tik-Tok and Instagram. If you keep them busy with bullshit they never amount to what they could be

I believe Jim Brown was a behind the scenes guy for some of Richard Pryor's stand up comedy shows and other works. That's the connection.

One of Pryor's biggest mistakes in life was hiring Jim Brown to run his movie production company. Many people do not know this.

And somewhere Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder were banging their heads against the wall. He had them dudes in his fan club forever. Imagine the turns his career would’ve taken.

Brooks said that Pryor, when he was on the ball, was one of the best screenwriters he ever worked with.

I aint gon lie, Im a Prince fan, Stan, Geek, whatever u wanna call me. Im totally fascinated with his artistry so Im actually caught off guard when I hear new info about him that I had not previously already heard about.

I can't even imagine John Travolta as Prince in Purple Rain. That would have been a travesty. It would not have been good at all. Prince wasn't the best actor, but he talented his way through it. John Travolta would have just languished in the role
