The NFL received interest from several German cities, but settled on London for the first game.

"There is no better place to begin this initiative than London," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. "It is one of the great cities of the world with an established and growing fan base for our game."

The venue and teams for next season's game will be announced later.

NFL owners voted in October to play up to two games outside the United States every season for the next five years. The international series will kick off with the game later this year in London.

Britain, Germany, Canada and Mexico have been identified as the top markets for NFL games outside the United States. China and Japan were ruled out of the running.

While the London venue hasn't been announced, the favorite option is the new Wembley Stadium, which is due to open this spring after years of delays.

"There are many NFL fans in London - both American and non-American - and this will be a spectacular sporting occasion," Mayor Ken Livingstone said. "After it success in winning the 2012 Olympics and Parlalympic Games, we want to bring Londoners the greatest of non-Olympic sports."

Details are expected to be announced by Goodell before the Feb. 4 Super Bowl in Miami.

The NFL staged its first regular-season game outside the United States in 2005 when 103,467 fans watched the Arizona Cardinals play the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City.

London hosted several NFL "American Bowl" preseason games in the 1990s. The city also had a franchise, the London Monarchs, in the World Football League - now called NFL Europe - but the team folded.

Now I can undestand an European who doesnt like american football, but you are talking out of your ass with that obese shit. Take away the offensive and defensive linemen, and American football players are probably the most physically fit athletes in the entire world.

From someone who reads Ayn Rand I am not suprised with your opinions on Obesity

Being Physically fit is doesnt mean they are not obese

Come on man...what planet are you on. The physiques of NFL players outside of offensive and defense linemen are probably the best in the world. They are far from obese and for the most part.. chiseled. You gotta be kidding me with that silly shit.

The Ayn Rand statement is just misplaced and irrelevant..especially considering a statement about obesity.

And how the hell can you be physically fit AND obese. That is a contradiction in terms. To be OBESE is to be unhealthily overweight. You can not be unhealthily overweight and simultaneously physically fit. You lose... GTFOH

First off I'm not from Scumdon. So there would be know reason for me to head back there. Proper title for this "advertisment" should have read nfl owners hire New Wembley for exhibition match. With enough money I could rent the New Wembley for sex shows featuring mexican women having it off with, horses, donkeys, mules, and Tamil fucking tigers.
You yanks never cease to amaze me, you can't even see the gaping fucking holes in the news propganda you read.

And then in the next fucking breath the writer drops this gem.

The city also had a franchise, the London Monarchs, in the World Football League - now called NFL Europe - but the team folded.

Now if american football was that popular... why did the team fold? No one outside of you lot gives a fuck about your rubbish sport, and as far as queing up for tickets

As an American who is a big fan of OUR version of football I think this is a VERY stupid idea. The NFL has and makes a shitload of money. There's no reason to force the sport on folks who aren't interested. I could see exhibition games, but don't tarnish the regular season by putting games overseas. As for soccer or European football, those guys are amazing athletes,I just can't watch the sport for more than 10-15 minutes,if that much without reaching for the remote and channel surfing. I only find the goalie play interesting. But it's an acquired taste, just like American football is. We shouldn't cram our sport down thier throats nor should they do vice versa.

Ticket requests pour in for London NFL game
LONDON (AP) - The NFL's first regular-season game outside North America already looks like a big hit.

More than 500,000 tickets were requested by about 160,000 fans in the three days following Friday's official announcement, the NFL said Wednesday.
The ticket request process ends Feb. 18, two months before tickets go on sale for the Oct. 28 game between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants at Wembley Stadium.

Wembley is expecting to seat between 85,000-90,000 for the game.

"Nearly all these requests have come from UK based fans," said Alistair Kirkwood, the managing director of NFL UK. "These figures do not take into account the allocation of tickets for Dolphins and Giants fans from the United States, so we anticipate a very quick sellout when tickets go on sale in early March."

On Sunday, more than 4,000 fans gathered in London to watch the Super Bowl at Super Bash, which is in its fourth year.
