Report: Celtics likely to release PG Telfair
April 24, 2007
BOSTON (Ticker) - It appears the Boston Celtics are prepared to sever ties with point guard Sebastian Telfair, who was arrested on a gun possession charge last Friday.
Telfair averaged 6.1 points and 2.8 assists this past season for the Celtics after being acquired from the Portland Trail Blazers for a first-round pick last June.
"We have removed Sebastian's nameplate from his locker in Waltham," Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck wrote in an e-mail to the Boston Globe. "The facts and circumstance of his case have not been determined but he does not have a Celtics locker and we do not anticipate that he will."
Telfair, 21, was charged with second-degree possession of a handgun and driving with a suspended license after being stopped for speeding on a Yonkers, New York highway last Friday. He pleaded not guilty to the charges at Yonkers City Court.
Telfair's brief NBA career has been marred by controversy. In February 2006, Telfair was suspended two games without pay for violating the NBA's firearms policy.
Telfair brought a handgun on the Portland team plane after a February 11 game in Boston. A flight attendant discovered the gun inside of Telfair's handmade pillow during a trip from Boston to Toronto.
Local authorities in Massachusetts accepted Telfair's explanation that he had grabbed his girlfriend's bag by mistake when he left for the team's flight.
Telfair was a lottery pick of the Trail Blazers in 2004 after starring at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York.
