Tech Help: Can ya'll recommend a good affordable router?

Seems like my router was infected during my last bout with a virus

:smh:

so hopefully I'm clean

I wanted to ask bgol tech services if they can recommend a good router?

I was gonna cop this one for about $100

I was also considering getting one with a cable modem ( I gotta check to see if Optimum is charging me every month for the one I got now)

folks won't like the recommendation but my airport express base station (apple) has been good to me...easy as fuck to configure w/ my ipad/iphone too...it's $100 as well

Spend the extra $30 and get the AirPort Extreme refurb from Apple
Or if you going with the express Apple has it for $50 refurb

Apple refurbished products are almost brand new , they change almost everything
And they check it here, you also get one year warranty

I had an AirPort Extreme refurb I got 5 years ago , recently I replaced it with the newer model refurb again to get wifi AC
BUT THE OLD ONE still works , BGOL android ain't gonna like this but they just work , never had to reboot or difficult to setup


Now google and other companies have some new mesh routers I don't really care about them now , maybe in 5 years

When you deal with asus or Samsung you might have a point not with Apple refurb
And your router don't even have AC wifi

The og poster should get the airport extreme , don't get any router without AC

And I like that Express cause I just need it for the apt and its just $99

But the Extreme looks nice too...

can I attach an external HD DIRECTLY to it?

and if I can attach an external HD can I access the files and media on there?

I have a 500gb portable drive connected to the extreme , I use it to backup my Mac with time machine
On the Mac you can use it for anything , it sees the drive like normal , I don't know how it would work on pc
But I don't know why you would use it for anything else when is going to be slow connected to a router

You don't know whaT AC is , I wouldn't worry about this the Apple router will work for another 5 to 10 years , they still selling them now
Support won't stop when they stop selling them

Mesh routers is just a hipster way to get wifi

You won't find any routers that worth connecting a hard drive to because the speed is going to be very slow. AC wireless is the new wiresless tech that came after a/b/g/n, you don't want to buy a router that doesn't support AC

Mesh is only worth it if you live in a large home and have dead wifi spots, but the tech in the google router is pretty good how it prioritize your wifi channels and devices to make sure you are always getting the best speeds.
 
This is the one I was going to get, but when I switched ISP's the instead of a modem I got a gateway with the router built in from them.

Whatever you decide to get, just check the reviews on amazon first. Some of the newer TP links won't let you put on 3rd party software any more. (DDWRT etc) I don't remember if the one above allows it or not.

Get the best Asus Router you can afford and install Merlin, Tomato or DD-WRT if you're into that kind of thing. They'll be updated regularly. Most of these companies are not going to keep up as they release newer versions of routers.

If you want to set it and forget it... Google's Onhubs are dead simple, managed from a phone app and the prices are way down since they releaseed their newer Google WiFi. Same thing though.

Put it mid range between the router and the furthest spot in your house you want to reach

And @playahaitian I have the TP-link Archer C7 got it cheap on Amazon Prime day in July but it's AC1750 and I have DD-WRT running on it. With my WiFi extender, does the whole house. It's about $87 now.

I got a zoom router because after doing a little research I found this brand works best with time warners/spectrums network...

I had it for over two years now and the shit is flawless....

go by your network and research which routers are most compatible with it..

I think that is one I'm getting...

I am tech simple so I don;t know how to run DD-WRT on it...what are the benefits?
