Also, other teams DO matter - but the fact is if the major market teams - LAKERS, CELTICS and KNICKS are competitive then the overall health of the NBA is much better.
The argument stemmed from Shaddy talking that stupid shit he always talks - so I wanted to make sure he knows that the Bulls aren't one of those teams - since he wanted to act like the Knicks don't matter.
You see, it's not really about disrespecting other teams and fanbases - because the NBA wants it so anyone can win - otherwise it would make no sense for fans to invest their time and money - but the NBA definitely wants LA, Boston, and NY to have competitive teams.
Remember, a few years ago David Stern offered his hand in helping the Knicks.

I brought up the NFL because people think NY is the center of the sports universe and it is not. Back to the NBA it is a star driven league not a franchise driven one. In five years the Celtics and Lakers will once again be irrelevant, but guess what the NBA will thrive still. No one around the world cares about franchises except for those fans of that franchise. Why can't people see this??? The only reason Boston and LA get shine is because of champion pedigree not because the entire world like them, but that does not matter to the new generation of fans who like superstars.

The NFL is a completely different beast from all other sports. It's way beyond all other sports as far as marketing and team history.

While we're on the topic of worldwide fanbases - the NFL, while immensely popular in the states doesn't have the worldwide popularity of the NBA. There are people halfway around the world who follow the Lakers religiously, the NBA religiously.
Also Beeiii stated that NY is the mecca of basketball and the biggest city. The former you can make an argument for and against, but the latter is indisputable. Proof being that Allan Houston's jersey was a top 10 seller, despite the Knicks not being contenders and AH20 not being a superstar.

The only decade in which the Celtics and Lakers were irrelevant were the 90s, and if MJ wasn't as big as he was the NBA would have surely been hurt. But both teams have been active in winning championships in the 60s, 70s, 80s and now 00s. The Knicks have been competitive.
The NBA doesn't want these teams to be the only ones winning, they just want them to be competitive because they'll contribute greatly to the NBA.
I seriously don't get why people argue against it.
When San Antonio was winning titles people didn't care. They were a good team to watch, and a great team overall. The Spurs/Pistons finals was competitive as fuck, but people weren't checking for it. - but look at what happened when Boston and LA met, when both teams started becoming contenders. The NBA doesn't need them to be contenders always, but just to be in the mix.
You arguing against that is arguing against an immutable fact of the NBA.
And like I been saying, more people than just fans of those franchises care about them doing well.
I've seen plenty people, people even on this board here, say "i hate the knicks, but I'd like for them to do well because it's good for the league"
You realize that the NY metro area is 19 million people, with millions more in other states.
You want an area with 19 million people to do well, because even if only half of those are fans, if half of that half (5 mil) start purchasing NBA products again or more it's MORE INCOME.
It's a fact that the better a team does more merchandise for that team is sold.
So even if it was just Knicks fans - what do you think the League would rather have

and in this thread I gave that era it's due. But the fact is, the Bulls, whether they're good or not, doesn't have much impact on the league overall. But Boston, LA and NY have a greater impact when they're competitive.
