WACO, Texas (KWTX) Waco police late Wednesday afternoon identified two officers who fired rounds from 12-gauge shotguns at a wanted man armed with a cocked 9-mm pistol following a foot chase through a local neighborhood as 11-year veteran Joey Kimble and 10-year veteran Josh McCuistion.

The two officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation and a criminal investigation that police are conducting jointly with the Texas Rangers, Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

Jonathon Tucker Gober, 32, remains at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center Wednesday after undergoing emergency surgery, Swanton said.

Federal marshals are guarding him, Swanton said.

Gober suffered wounds to the arm, abdomen and leg when the two officers each fired a single shotgun round at him Tuesday after finding him in the backyard of a home in North Waco following the foot chase.

Gober refused to drop the weapon and was shot as he turned toward the officers with the semi-automatic pistol in his hand, Swanton said.

“The weapon…was found to have a round chambered, hammer cocked and bullets in the magazine,” Swanton said.

Waco police were assisting U.S. marshals at around 4:35 p.m. Tuesday in the effort to arrest Gober, who was wanted for a probation violation on a federal counterfeiting charge, Swanton said.

As authorities approached a home in the 2500 block of North 29th Street, the wanted man attempted to hide and then escaped through the back door, Swanton said.

Officers, who had been told by family members that Gober was armed, gave chase and caught up with Gober behind a home at North 30th Street and Lyle Avenue, he said.

After Gober was shot, officers applied tourniquets to stop the bleeding and administered first aid until paramedics arrived, authorities said.
