Support Children's Literacy Funding in FY13!
Tell Congress to support continued funding for the Department of Education's Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant competition!
In 2011, Congress eliminated federal funding for RIF – costing the organization $24.8 million. That year, as Congress considered spending measures for 2012, a new national literacy grant competition known as the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) was created.
While IAL totals only $28 million in its first year – significantly lower than the previous federal investment in literacy programs like RIF and others prior to the sweeping budget cuts in 2011 – it would still provide vital funding for programs like RIF, school libraries and others.
As Congress is now at work drafting the 2013 budget, it’s critical that this investment in children’s literacy remains. Unfortunately, the House spending measure eliminates funding for the IAL program. Our allies in the Senate though have included $29 million for the program for Fiscal Year 2013 in their bill.
Write to your Members of Congress today. Tell them to maintain support for the Department of Education’s Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant competition.
Make sure your representatives in Washington know that you support funding for our nation’s most critical investment: our children’s success in schools – and the future.
