Photos posted to social media show former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake refusing to stand for the Black national anthem at the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" before Super Bowl LVII, pitting the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The song, written more than 100 years ago, became a rallying cry during the civil rights movement, and the NFL began including it in its games following the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. The league has faced backlash over its inclusion from some conservatives.
Right-wing pundit Benny Johnson shared a photograph of Lake, who rose to national prominence during her bid to become Arizona's top executive during the 2022 midterm elections, refusing to stand for the performance.
Lake, through her campaign's "war room" Twitter account, addressed why she refused to stand for the song.

"Our girl is against the idea of a 'black National Anthem' for the same reason she's against a 'white National Anthem,'" her campaign team wrote. "She subscribes to the idea of "one Nation, under God."

Other high-profile conservatives also took to social media to speak out against the inclusion of the Black anthem. Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, accused the NFL of trying to "divide" viewers by airing the performance. However, critics argued that Boebert's tweet was more divisive than the show.
"America only has ONE NATIONAL ANTHEM. Why is the NFL trying to divide us by playing multiple!? Do football, not wokeness," Boebert tweeted.
Former Republican Senate candidate James Bradley tweeted: "Having a black national anthem is just another way that Democrats keep us divided."
Despite conservative criticism, many on social media praised Ralph for her rendition of the song.
"Sheryl Lee Ralph SANG the Black National Anthem chile. I felt it in my spirit," tweeted WTXF-TV news anchor Shiba Russell.
"Let The Super Bowl begin. Wow Sheryl Lee Ralph!" tweeted ABC News journalist Deborah Roberts.
History of the Black National Anthem
"Lift Every Voice and Sing" was first written by NAACP leader James Weldon Smith in 1990. His brother, John Rosamond Johnson, composed the music for its lyrics, according to the NAACP. It was first performed by a group of students from a segregated school in Jacksonville, Florida, to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln's birthday.
As the civil rights movement arrived, the song had become well known in Black culture and was performed during meetings in which civil rights leaders planned the Montgomery Bus Boycott, according to Time magazine. Martin Luther King, Jr., has quoted it in his speeches.
The NFL, while aiming to confront concerns of racism raised by many of its players, began including the song in its games following the Black Lives Matter protests, drawing condemnation from conservatives, who argue it is divisive. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy defended the song in a 2021 New York Times interview, describing its inclusion as "an opportunity to highlight messages that are important to the league, players and personnel and our communities."

The fact that so many more egregious "should have been penalties" weren't called or aren't called is the problem.
Bradbury admitted either under request from his coaches or just acceptance of the penalty, but I have seen worse holding penalties not called. I see it every game. He didn't pull the Jersey away from the body. What's worse it was an overthrow so had he not touched the guy it would have been incomplete
As a fan of the game I want consistency and that's something you won't get with NFL referees. I see defensive players held all the time. I watched an offensive lineman from the Chiefs lay on and hold down an eagles Defender as Pat Mahomes scrambled around and there was no call
The fact that these motherfuckers already pick and choose when to swallow their whistles is something that NFL fans have a problem with. So when they call a play like this at a time like this when it's a questionable penalty in the first quarter is maddening. I'm glad it wasn't my team that lost like that

Refs gotta be consistent of course. What they gotta let go is the stuff away from the ball.
If I'm running an offense to win the game and my primary read is running a double move but gets held when he cuts, it HAS to get called, because there is no other read there. That is my ONE chance to make the play.
I promise you, Mahomes is either throwing that ball to Juju or he is throwing it away, that's it.
By the way, Eagles fans can't say shit, their DBs were holding all game long and they got MORE then enough calls go their way.
It's insane what fans want the refs to do. They want the refs to know all the rules, see everything all the time, make split decision judgement calls but never be wrong, but on top of that we want them to factor in the importance of the moment when they make those judgement calls.
The right call was made, we can stop being mad.

They were the only two players on that side of the field and the ref was staring directly at them.
The call was holding before the pass was thrown which it was.

It’s just the consistency from the refs even the commentators will say you can’t make that call, let them play.(NBA/NFL) The timing of the call usually happens around the most pivotal time of the game. Dez Bryant catch and Calvin Johnson catch was ruled incomplete at a critical part of the game.
Qb’s are throwing the ball at a high velocity these wide receivers are stopping the ball in the air. Also the fumble caused by Charles Woodson against Tom Brady. At that time nobody even heard of the tuck rule.
Last but least why they got the black man copping a plea on a holding call. Taking the heat off the ref..Like said earlier how are you reviewing catches caught inbounds out of bounds. He’s no longer in the field of play.

Was it just me or was that Rihanna halftime show the drizzling shits? I was not hyped for it cause she can’t sing but she has been a fairly good performer but that was horrible. After you saw the platform she was on that was it,she couldn’t even be bothered to lip sync to the actual songs. Prince,MJ are rolling over in their graves over that SB halftime performance
