How did you study ?/ What are some effective study tips ?

I cant seem to focus so many distractions TV,Music,BGOL lol.

I can usually study for stuff in my major (Philosophy) but I have two lower level math classes to take before I graduate and Its hard focusing on something I have no interest in.

HELP!

(1) Go to the library or someplace with NO distractions
(2) Study about an hour after eating a decent meal.
(3) Don't cram, study in small pieces until you understand the rules, how the pieces behind the concept work and then the concept. (Think, musicians don't try to memorize the entire piece of music at once - they do it in bars).

good advice

might sound crazy but that making songs/phrases with key words you need to know WORKS... no shit!!!

you need to focus... it's really up to the person some people study like hell others don't need to put in that much effort and they still make good grades.

Get some fuckin self control nigga and just DO WORK. Anytime you feel urself swayin left, just think about dat nice payin salary you gone get when u graduate and all da opportunities dat'll come with it.

Problem with the US school systems is that they dont teach you how to "study" I think that the grades would improve greatly if there was a systematic approach to studying that was taught at a young age. Its a shame that I did well and was just winging it...My dad taught me how to study when I was younger but his message fell on deaf ears when he brought it up in school board meetings...

Check that book out it was very good..

I just continually thought about graduation...
As graduation came closer - studying became easier...
I was determined not to be the guy who was without any decoration during graduation... I thought it would be embarrassing standing next to the guy with all the honors stuff and I had none - so I made a point to get my honors...
But the best motivation for me was May, 18 2008... That's how alot of my classmates and I motivated each other... reminding them of the goal at hand...

But the above mentioned tips work as well...
Go to a secluded environment away from everything...
Just bring your books and maybe an ipod... location does help alot...

the libary was too much of a distraction....without fail i would run into someone i knew and ended up chatting with them

i get distracted easy...so for some reason it was hard for me to focus at home...so i would go to starbucks with my ipod and study

i also have a terrible memory...so i actually did so songs...phrases...come up with random associations and also acronyms for stuff i was studying

have u tried studying with a friend?....or even go the study sessions the class/department has..sometimes two heads are better than one

because i learn better with repetition i would make note cards...and study them...i would also do a super cram before the test because everything is still fresh on my mind

HELP!

Figure out your learning style. I'm a visual learner. Flash cards, charts, and diagrams helped me a lot. I used to wear ear plugs in the library so i wouldn't be distracted.

I normally drink coffee(it keep you focus and you can multi-task when you drink it) the down fall with using coffee over a long period of time is that, it destroy your nerves and leave you dependent on it. If you're willing to take the risk of becoming dependent on caffeine and get ready for the withdrawal symptoms then use it but, be advice that it is very addictive and about 98% of Americans use it to focus on things.

I never liked the library- too quiet. I usually locked myself in my room and listened to the local jazz station. But when it's time for a test, eat fish the night before. It'll help you think better and retain more information.

Take your ass to an environment in which others are studying: Borders Books, School Library, Coffee Shops. Use BGOL and TV as a reward for getting things done, not as a goal in itself.

And every fucking day, count down how many more days you have before the end of the semester. Keep your eye on the ball!

Oh yea, quit smoking that weed, you aint got time for that shit!

I had it pretty easy my first three years, I didn't have a roomate. The last year, all that shit caught up to me. I had the worst roommate I could possibly have. Kats all up in the room, playing video games, chillin. Basically the kind of kats that would be there one or two years tops.

I hit up the library a lot. They had these study rooms that you could close the door and not hear a sound. Luckily, my girl at the time didn't have a roommate, so I was able to go there too and type papers and have peace. Also had pussy on tap too. Those are your best two options.

Learn how to study in short bursts, don't try to cram it all in. Half hour, then do something else. Half hour studying again. That really worked for me. Also, for some reason, waking up at the crack of dawn and reading something, I was really able to retain a lot of knowledge.

I looked at the people that weren't studying and thought, I don't want to be like them. I'd been out of school for 4 years. When I went back a few weeks ago, I saw that some of those same people were still there.

This is the secret to making an A in any fucking class in college.

The first test is usually the easiest so study you ass off for it. Seriously its eassier to study at the beginning of a school year because of renewed focus.

After you get that first A make it known you got an A then fall into a crowd of frog lookings girls that study all the time these bitches are weak for dudes that make good grades. THIS IS THE KEY

Make friend with a group of FINE dumb bitches.

Heres how you work it, study everyday with the smart bitches like they have a habit of doing they will keep you together just cause girls like to nurture people.

Then 2 weeks hell 1 week before the test the DUMB bitches will come a knocking and you work this combo of tutoring them then fucking. Since you obviously know more than them they will ask you questions this will in turn PUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE TO THE TEST AND EXPLOIT WHAT YOU DONT KNOW! This teaching! Will force you to learn, cause you dont want to miss out on the dumb bitch pussy. Cause its basically going to be you in their dorm room alone if you cant close that deal, kill yourself.

Now on the day of the test, you know the material and if you sit beside of the smart bitches you study with they will probably let you copy their test since they know you tryin.

You in turn let prospect dumb hos look at your paper that you dont fuck with yet, then after the test drop the you will help them tutor game. Next thing you know you dont fucked 90% of the girls in your major.

Thank me later.

When you dont feel like studying, keep this pic in mind. And being black and stupid is a crime, fuck what ya heard!!

Take what ever you have to study and rewrite it on a piece of paper using key words.
make the whole paragraph/chapter smaller.

for example:

Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy into chemical energy by living organisms. The raw materials are carbon dioxide and water; the energy source is sunlight; and the end-products are oxygen and (energy rich) carbohydrates, for example sucrose, glucose and starch. This process is arguably the most important biochemical pathway,[1] since nearly all life on Earth either directly or indirectly depends on it.

rewrite that as:

Photosynthesis -> light energy into chemical energy --> CO2 + H2O

when you rewrite something, instead of just reading it, your brain actually memorizes it better.

Go to sleep and set your alarm clock to 4 am.

4-6 am.

start with that sheet of paper.
read the 1st lines, repeat it out loud or in your head.
read the 2nd line, repeat it out loud or in your head.
go back to the first line etc etc.

trust me, I had a 97 average and this is how I studied.

also do your Home work, it helps.
Most of the test material = homework.

Man if you are like me and reading puts you sleep take a power nap before your readings so you won't be sleepy but your best bet is to go to a quiet place with no distractions like a library. When I was in undergrad I use to go the 4th floor where nobody was in a corner and slap on the headsets and go.

Two things that helped me were staying in good shape and eating a light meal before studying (a heavy meal might put you to sleep).

Don't fuck with caffeine. Do some quick pushups or something.

Remember that your brain is a muscle and repetition helps to build strength and endurance.

wellllllllll

i have horrible study habits...well not really, i just procrastinate (but in terms of putting the finishing touches on stuff...i already have an idea/grasp of he info...i assess b4 i procrastinate...yeah i know :smh:)

anyway but when i do study

1) i can't study in my apt so i go to the library, student center/union or learning center so i can be in an atmosphere that is conducive to studying

2) my friends and i used to study together in the lounges or make trips to the library together (different subjects but a supportive atmosphere)

3) i used to go into an empty classroom and read over my notes or study in before, in between or after class

4) i tried to set up study groups so we would meet weekly or every 2 weeks to go over what happened in class (i made sure i did my work cuz i didn't want to look like a slacker)

5) put aside either 3-4 hours a day you are gonna go to the library and study...man i would go in the library and it would be son outside and leave at like 3am...tired as hell BUT VERY VERY accomplished

6) if you are anything like me and get distracted easy...BRING YOUR BOOKS WITH YOU when you plan to go to the library...don't stop back to your room first cuz you'll never make it out

7) i actually set alarms in my phone telling me to study

8) i made a reward system for myself...if i successfully did some studying or an assignment i would treat myself to something recreational/ social/ lazy/trip or buy myself something

I hope these help

(3) Don't cram, study in small pieces until you understand the rules, how the pieces behind the concept work and then the concept. (Think, musicians don't try to memorize the entire piece of music at once - they do it in bars).

Number one and three worked for me (I didn't eat a decent meal until after I finished college), but with one added thing: I would write and re-write study materials. I found that if I wrote it at least once, I could remember it later.

HELP!

#1 unless you plan to be a teacher, have a minor in a technical field, or plan to go straight for a masters' and doctorate afterwards, you will need to change your major ASAP. Philosophy is probably one of the most useless majors offered. Sorry but it's true.

#2 go to the student center and study. Take some music with you if need be. If you can't focus on studying while music is playing (especially classical/jazz/instrumentals) there is more than likely something wrong with you. Go see a psychiatrist or something.

#3 find a tutor for math/science classes if you have absolutely no affinity for math/science. Those classes are grounded in logic, something that philosophy might not necessarily teach that well. Essentially they are the exact opposite of what you're trying to major in. If you aren't used to thinking that way, you will definitely need the extra help from a tutor.

you do understand that logic is a branch of philosophy right?

C/S.

2 hours per unit, spread throughout the week is the way to go. If you're looking for distractions you'll find them. Don't look for them.

From what I understand, mathematical logic and philosophical logic are 2 different things. Or at least, the applications are 2 different things. I took logic as part of my CS/IS curriculum but no philosophy was taught as part of the course; it was, however, easily applied to the math courses I took. Then again, I went to a tech school and the most liberal courses offered there were psychology and art history electives. Maybe I should have clarified that in my earlier post.

Read EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO READ TWICE BEFORE THE EXAM

I realized this after I passed a resit exam in my early years of college, without doing much studying for the resit. The material was just familiar (not new) so it was suddenly easier.

So scan the textbook the day the material is forst taught in class. (Preferably do this right after classes, take an hour to go over what was taught that day). On that day, don't read to understand, just to ensure your brain registers the nature of the material.

You will find it easier to understand quickly close to exam time, cos your brain will not see it as something new.

And remmeber: the brain only burns long term memory while you are sleeping.

I studied for 8 to 10 hours a day M thru F.
I would do 50 mins on and 10 min break.
No TV, radio, phone etc for the 50 mins.
Anything goes for the 10 mins off.

I would do at least 2 hours at a time but I think its important to determine what time is your best time to study.

I would do all my classes and running around during the day. I usually studied from 6pm to 2am in the morning.

I tried to do projects and papers on the weekends, allowing time to recreate and hang out some.

Good Studying!
