Is there really a need to teach men something most of us have been doing since we were 5?

Well, yes actually.

Just look around.

How many men do you see sporting a billowy, unkempt-looking shirt?

Or what about that guy giving a presentation who unconsciously re-tucked his shirt three times during a 5-minute talk?

Most men probably have no system for tucking in their shirts.

Just because you do something, doesn’t mean you are doing it correctly.

The goal of this article is to expose you to a few tactics that might eliminate the nuisance of an un-tucked or wrongly tucked shirt.

So let’s get started!

What to Tuck & What Not to Tuck

When should you tuck in your shirt? It’s a question that’s often debated. Here are a few guidelines:

Shirts that are made with a flat bottom hem are meant to be worn untucked. But if the shirt has visible “tails” — that is to say, the hem varies in length, rather than being even all the way around — it should always be tucked in.

Wearing a shirt with tails untucked is not a forbidden look. But it is a juvenile one. With nothing else on the upper body, it makes you look like a teen rebel at a grown-up wedding. Under a jacket or with a suit, being untucked makes you look like you’re trying too hard to be stylishly rumpled.

There are men who will insist on the artfully un-tucked shirt. More power to them. But for my money, tucking in a shirt with tails will always give you a sharper and more mature look.

If your shirt doesn’t have visible tails, there’s more leeway on whether you should leave it tucked or untucked:

  • Undershirts — These can always be tucked, and absolutely should be if there’s any chance of them poking out from beneath your other layers. For best results, tuck undershirts into underwear (more on this below).
  • Polo shirts — They have an even hem and can be worn untucked, but are often tucked in for a little dressier look, especially by golfers. Rugby shirts, their long-sleeved cousins, are almost never tucked in, however.
  • Turtleneck/roll collars — When worn under a sports jacket or blazer, these are often tucked so that the belt buckle is visible. On their own, it’s better to leave them untucked.
  • Hawaiian shirts — These and any other loud-print shirts don’t get tucked no matter what their hem looks like. Seriously, just don’t. Nothing looks dorkier than a tucked-in vacation shirt. This goes for Guayaberas as well.
  • T-shirts — Opinions are going to vary widely here. Some subcultures love the tucked T-shirt with the visible belt buckle; others will think you look like a total nerd. It depends a lot on the shirt, the belt, and the trousers, as well as your overall style. In general, don’t tuck the T-shirt unless it’s a deliberate style statement.

The only time I tuck in t-shirts is when wearing a short coat. I don't want to go outside looking like a curtain

A lot of style stuff is VERY subjective.

like the writer said there are shirts MADE to be worn untucked...button Ups.

And when Jay popularized that sytle everyone was doing it (many incorrectly) even at the office and it was fine

so while there are real laws in fashion some ARE subjective

and I'll tell you this

I've seen white boys come in for an interview untucked with jeans and a blazer and no one says sh*t

let a brother come in like that?

BUM.

So again while I pretty much agree with this?

I have worn a nice button up with jeans cuffed the sleeves with my cole haans jordans or suede pumas to the office on a Friday or on a weekend.

If you got the frame height and the confidence you can pretty much pull off anything.

It depends. Dress shirts should be tucked, sport shirts are untucked(depending on the function). If I'm wearing jeans I'm not tucking anything in, that's just not happening. If I'm rocking denim washed khaki's(Gap, Dockers Alpha khaki's *personal fav*), untucked shirt. If you're wearing a blazer, tuck it... pretty much only leave it untucked if you're going for a casual look and not wearing a DRESS shirt, please know the difference between a dress shirt and a sport shirt.

The example they used is a horrible one because the shirt is too fucking big for him in the first place, so why don't they start with buying your correct size?

I usually never have a dress shirt that's not accompanied by a coat of some kind (Suit/Blazer) So it's always tucked
Every other shirt is never tucked.
I'm not wearing Choppa shirts. They fit.

I dunno what kind of body types yall fellas have. If youre in decent shape, its a little easier to figure out your style, because most clothes are kinda fitted these days. Buy stuff that fits correctly, thats a step in the right direction.

THANK YOU! None of that shit matters if your clothes is too big/small, start with buying your damn size.

DON'T be like TMac

I would never wear a dress shirt untucked; I don't give a damn about the hem. There are casual button ups that you can do that with.

right...and as ill mentioned it's a dress shirt too...a casual shirt I can respectably wear untucked...also the size is important...w/ an "unhemmed" shirt the front "tail" should not go pass mid-crotch for me

I hear T-Mac had to borrow Shaqs pants, because something was wrong with his own suit. If it was me, I would've just had to say fuck getting paid that night, because theres no way I would ever get on tv looking like that. :smh:

OT but man I knew this dude in college who used to tuck his fucking hoodie into his jeans looking crazy af

anyway just realized the poll said dress shirt...so for dress shirts yes I always tuck in...but re: the thread title you can do both depending on the style of shirt and still look respectable if you observe some little do's/don'ts

I agree, the problem a lot of cats are having is as fashion evolves the lines btwn casual and dress are blurred. I can't say for certain, but I'm not sure dress shirts came in "prints" until fairly recently, but now they do and you can get pretty fucking fresh in a suit and print/plaid DRESS shirt.

But it still all comes back to size and fit. Size and fit can make or break your whole outfit.

Fuck that, they don't have a seamstress on staff or something? I'm with you, they could either fix my shit or stick me behind a desk because there's no way I'd be standing in front of a camera like that

another "rule" I use is if it has numbers to indicate size on the neck I'm tucking it in...if it has a letter I can leave it untucked lol

That's usually a good indication of if it's a dress shirt or a sport shirt. If the shit came folded in a bag and you had to take 300 pins and a piece of cardboard out of the muthafucka just to iron it, I'd say it's best you tuck it

There you have it.

...I'm to old and grown to care about how another man wears his clothes, unless he ask me my opinion and then I would simply tell him "If you like it I love it".

The whole point of fashion and style is wearing what you like and are comfortable in.What I notice now a days in dude's trying to keep up with what's in style urban wise and wearing things like form fitted jeans, designer shoes, fake belts, joggers and shit like that, like dawg you're 40yr old let it go.

I recently found out about shirt stays to keep tucked shirts looking sharp
I have yet to try them as i normally rock my shirts untucked, but think they are a cool idea
