Study: Blu-ray Will Rescue Disc Sales

Blu-Ray burners have been out: http://reviews.cnet.com/dvd-drives/sony-bwu-100a-blu/4505-3212_7-31899197.html

Blank single layer(25gig) discs still going for $10-$20 A PIECE. Dual Layer media(50gig) going for $30-$50 a disc. In other words expect to see a nigga on the 6oclock news if he burns a coaster

 damn I'm late... fuck it, them cats will never learn. I remember back in 2000 I was in 11th grade, I copped a lil portable phillips cd burner for like 100 bucks  it was over, if I purchased more than 10 or 15 retail cd's since then its a miracle

I remember my boy having the entire Sade video collection on Laserdisc. I was like why you pulling out these big ass golden records for??

But laserdisc was broken technology because 1) They were too huge, nobody wants to be carrying around record sized movies and 2) they couldn't even fit whole movies on one side of a disc. I remember watching Jurassic Park and it stopped in the middle of the movie and my boy was like "hold on i gotta flip the disc". WTF!!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

another reason i saw laser discs failing.. i was doing holiday work at sam goody..

i could put cassettes in my timberlands and pockets.. stack cd's in cd towers and at the register charge a friend for just a magazine..

but you couldnt steal laser discs..

back when you could fool metal detectors with a bag lined on the inside with reynolds wrap

I have a Bravia XBR with 120MHZ. BluRay looks Insane.

I can understand why some people don't have BluRay yet. Its because you need a HD with 120MHZ Technology to see the difference. and most people have regular TVs and not HD

bullshit marketing hype.....

you don't need 120mhz to see shit. a good source player and a decent scaler makes all that a moot point.

get out of the cave.... there's a alot of blu-rays around the $20 price range now. Walmart even has some for $10. Walmart also has 2pack blu-rays for $20 and $30.

On another board, dudes was discussing how they were paying like $30 for DVDs when they first came out. Its the samething in this situation.

It's not quite the same. When DVD came out it was competing with VHS. The difference between the two formats were plain to see. Plus you didn't have to buy a New TV to take advantage of the technology. In addition a lot of early adopters of DVD were able to get movies well under $20 from vendors on the Web not to mention BOGO deals. The real question is how long are the Hollywood studios going to push Blu-Ray if sales don't improve as planned. Will they start cutting corners on extra features delay releases or limit Blu-ray to only Titles that will garner high sales.

Blu-Ray still has a bit of an uphill climb. I think Blu-Ray will have made it when you can get a copy of "I spit on Your Grave" or episodes of the three stooges on BD.

Fuck buying Blu-Ray discs...the only ones I own came with the player.

Up-converted 1080i DVDs look great on both my hi-def TVs.....

When they make Blu-ray recorders,I'll get excited.

Nothing is happening until they stop having all the new Blue Ray disc 30 bucks and 3 year old disc for 20. People need to be able to walk into stores and get the latest movies for 20.

so why did you get the player? you could have just gotten an upscale dvd player.

I have an up-converting DVD player...when I bought a new TV I wanted to see what 1080p looked like,so I bought the player.

I still rent blu-rays from time to time...I just don't have the need to own many movies.

Man I was up in Best Buy today and saw Rush Hour 3 for $35 :smh: That movie needs to go in the Blu Ray bargin bin.

people, just like reg dvd and eventually blu ray, there is a better alternative to shopping in stores. actually there are 2:

1 - shopping online. Buy your movies from, ebay, amazon and buy.com. I have over 150 blu rays and never paid full price for any of them. There are sales going on constantly. B2g1 free. 40% off, 50% off, free shipping, buying sets, etc. believe me, these options save you money. Correction, i probably paid full price for one movie. Forgot which one it was though. Also, pre-ordering helps also. Right now, i have 11 movies in pre order thru amazon.

2 - Just like with reg dvds, im sure you can find someone on the street selling them. Got a guy by my job selling (new, never opened) new movies for $20, and older movies for $10-$15. You can always get deals with these guys. Not to mention, there is J&R right down the block as well, they also have sales frequently.

You dont always have to buy from best buy and circuit city. You will pay twice as much.

Official: Pioneer kills off Laserdisc players
Yes, you read that right

Official: Pioneer kills off Laserdisc players
Yes, you read that right and no, this isn't news from 1989

With Panasonic bringing back the VHS (albeit connected to a Blu-ray deck) and every AV manufacturer under the sun harping on about 3D as if it's the Second Coming, you'd be forgiven in thinking that technology today has a slightly retro feel to it.

Well, Pioneer has done nothing to discourage this thought by announcing that it is to cease production of Laserdisc players. Yes, that's right those LP-shaped movie carriers that we all thought died out around the same time DVD came into play.

Audiovisual enjoyment

In a press release, Pioneer broke the news as gently as possible to the two people who still own Laserdiscs – Peter and Sally Jenkins from Norfolk are their names – by offering a bit of insight into how the Laserdisc came to be and how it changed the AV industry:

"In 1980, Pioneer introduced its first consumer LD player (VP-1000) in the US market, followed by the Japanese market in 1981 and other markets accordingly.

"The company has seen worldwide sales of its LD players reach more than 9.5 million units to date in a market that saw worldwide sales top 16.8 million devices.

"It has contributed to the audiovisual enjoyment of so many consumers all over the world."

Format fracas

Apparently, LD's world domination was scuppered by those next-gen video formats, DVD and Blu-ray.

Joking aside, Laserdisc was the AV enthusiasts' choice before DVD. Offering much the same functionality and extras as DVD – it was the first place you could find a director's commentary – helmers like Peter Jackson swore by the product as it allowed them to speak directly to their audiences.

Unfortunately, DVD with its compact look and ease-of-use won through in the end, with LD destined to reside in format hell beside Mini Disc, HD DVD and Betamax.

The last batch

For those interested in purchasing one of the last LD players, then here's a list of the final models: DVL-919(DVD/LD compatible player), CLD-R5 (LD/CD player), DVK-900 (DVD/LD karaoke system), and DVL-K88 (DVD/LD compatible karaoke player).

And for those worried that their current LD player will run out of parts, you'll be pleased to know that Pioneer has promised to keep a repair service going.

Goodbye Laserdisc, now that we have been reminded of your existence, you will be sorely missed.
