U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, has died after suffering a brain aneurysm, said sources familiar with the situation.

She was removed from life support at 12:19 p.m. at Huron Road Hospital, the sources said.

Tubbs Jones, 58, served as a Cuyahoga County judge and prosecutor before succeeding U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes. She has served five terms in Congress and is expected to easily win her sixth in November.

The mood of supporters around noon was somber. Cleveland Councilman Roosevelt Coats was seen sobbing outside the hospital. He said Tubbs Jones was unconscious and her friends and relatives were preparing for the worst.

Tubbs Jones Defends Support of Sen. Clinton

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones remains in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after suffering an aneurysm while driving on Tuesday night.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Cleveland Clinic Dr. Gus Kious disclosed that Tubbs Jones has limited brain function.

According to Dr. Lious the aneurysm "burst in an inaccessible part of her brain".(Click here for facts on aneurysms)

Joe Hewitt, a spokesperson for the lawmaker, is asking people to keep her in their prayers.

A prayer vigil will be held for Tubbs Jones at 5 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4069 Eastwood Lane, Warrensville, Ohio, 44122.

The announcement clarified conflicting media reports surrounding the condition of the 11th District Congresswoman.

According to a press release from Tubbs Jones office, the five term Congresswoman was admitted to Huron Hospital after suffering an aneurysm while driving her car in Cleveland Heights.

According to a spokesperson with the Cleveland Heights Police Department, approximately 9 pm on Tuesday a Cleveland Heights Police Officer observed Tubbs Jones car traveling eastbound on Mayfield Road, weaving from side to side. At Lee Road the car turned left and the officer followed. The car slid off the road into a grassy area near the intersection of Lee Road and Monticello Boulevard.

Police tell Fox 8's Todd Meany that the congresswoman was transported to Huron Hospital in East Cleveland.

A statement from Tubbs Jones' office indicated that Tuesday's condition followed a full day of activity, including planning for an upcoming forum on electoral reform, scheduled for September 4, 2008 at Cleveland State University. Congresswoman Tubbs Jones was scheduled to travel to Denver on August 24, 2008 to attend the Democratic National Convention as a superdelegate.
