Sprint Evo releasing June 13th...

Time to talk a little competition, namely: the iPhone. Apple has announced iPhone 4.0 and sister-site TiPb is all over it. There are 7 "Tentpole" features that Apple is saying will excite end users. Email gets a bump with multiple Exchange accounts (welcome to the party, guys), fast inbox switching, and threaded messaging (point). iBooks arrives. Enterprise support gets better. Apple gets a social gaming hub. Making ads for mobile apps is easier. You can create folders for apps. All good stuff.

The big one, though, is 'multitasking,' and yes, we have our snark fully on with the scare quotes. What Apple is doing instead of 'true' multitasking is offering seven different OS-level services that apps can take advantage of in lieu of actually running in the background: audio, VOIP, location, push notifications, local notifications, task finishing, and fast app switching. To switch to a recently opened app, you double-tap the home button and a dock of your recent apps pops up. When you think about it, it's actually a very elegant solution for maintaining the maximum amount of battery life and speed on a device - albeit by sacrificing certain things.

So why would a non-charitable person call this 'multitasking-lite?' Such a gadfly might point out that the UI here isn't as elegant as webOS; that it requires developers to revisit their apps to add multitasking support; that there's no 'closing' apps because in most cases technically they're not running in the background, they're just frozen and the OS is providing services for them; that there might be background services that developers would want that aren't in Apple's list of seven; that worst of all Apple is making developers spend more and more time on iPhone-only code instead of code that could potentially work cross-platform, thereby increasing lock-in.

Heck, that gadfly might even point out that there are multiple meanings to the word 'multitasking' and one meaning surely includes 'managing multiple tasks without crazy-annoying and interruptive pop-up notifications bothering you and then disappearing as a badge on an icon in some folder on page 7 of your iPhone springboard.'

Good thing we're not that mean. Instead we'll just say that we wish our iPhone-toting friends well and will continue to be jealous of the number of apps and battery life on the iPhone. We'll also wonder if there are background tasks that aren't covered in Apple's list of seven - can you think of any?

iPhone don't really do multitasking......neither will the EVO 4G. the only real multitasker is WEBOS...oh don't get too huffy about the shitty handsets or the lack luster ADs Palm is spending 540 mil developing a new handset and WEBOS 2.0. I'm gonna wait to see what Palm does before i jump on the EVO bandwagon...I'm happy with my Pre after I made some changes.

Wrong. Both android and Windows Mobile can perform multitasking.

I go by network package then phone and AT&T is wayyy to expensive for data IMO

Correct em if I am wrong but with all this wi-fi there is no need to be chained to an expensive data plan which rarely kicks in if you are at home and in the office most of the time

Sprint has been making some serious price drops and I think amma make the leap...the iPhone was the greatest phone 3 years ago (so great that I looked past the crappy network and pricing which was a mistake) but when my contract is up I'm out

They run in the background. You can't perform multiple tasks without having to close app windows & then go through the process of reopening the app again. In WebOS, you can 5+ windows all open at the same time making switching between them seamless. The main limitation to it right now is data usage while on a call which is a carrier limitation not the OS. I have a Nexus One now but miss the card system of WebOS.

so people complain about how much att charges but everyone is dancing over this 4g even though it clearly states it will cost an additional 10 to 20 dollars a month for 4g access.

According to said sources 4G will be available as a top-up on base plan which may cost between $10 and $20, a price that would include access to the EVO’s 8-device WiFi hotspot capability and won’t come standard with existing EV-DO plans.

Damn didn't know you can use this phone as a mobile hot spot.:eek::eek::eek::eek:

:dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance:

I'm most Def getting this phone.

i guess we comprehend things differently because from what i read from that link the op posted it clearly said that 4g would be an additional 10 to 20 bucks a month.

Rumor mill but the Pre & Instinct were released in June.

http://www.gadgetsdna.com/htc-evo-4g-from-sprint-on-june-13th/1954/

HTC EVO 4G smartphone was likely to hit shelves before 6th June this year as claimed by an Android certification engineer for Sprint earlier. But sources have told Engadget that HTC’s Evo 4G handset is set to hit shelves on Sunday, June 13.

is it still just a rumor or is it gonna drop in june?

I love WebOS, but i hate the Pre. I'm also not to sure of Palm's future. I hate to be a bandwagoneer, but Im getting the Evo when Im eligble for an upgrade (August)

Wrong again. Windows Mobile is the most versatile mobile platform that can multitask with FULL usability. For example Google Maps can be open while, downloading through TWO different browsers, with the Different movie or music players running simultaneously. Android can do the same. Web OS is limited by hardware because it's stuck on the Pre. My HD2 can run over 15 apps at a time before seriously slowing down.
