NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks have made significant progress in recent days in their efforts to acquire Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets, a source told ESPN.com Tuesday.

After a period of dormancy following the collapse of a four-team trade late last month between New Jersey, Denver, Utah and Charlotte, the Knicks got back in on the bidding about two weeks ago after Anthony made it known to the Nuggets that he would not budge on his refusal to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension with Denver.

The offers the Knicks have proposed have always centered around packages including Anthony Randolph, the expiring contract of Eddy Curry and a first-round draft pick they would acquire from a third team, and New York has softened its stance on including forward Danilo Gallinari in a trade.

The most recent obstacle, according to the source, was for the Knicks to use one of those assets, likely Randolph or Gallinari, to acquire a player from a third team that the Nuggets value more highly than either of the Knicks forwards. The source said that obstacle can now be overcome, with the Knicks confident they can get their hands on a player the Nuggets would prefer.

The source also cautioned that the Chicago Bulls remained in the Melo mix, although the contract extension Chicago reached earlier this month with Joakim Noah would preclude him from being included in any deal the Bulls would put together for Anthony.

Also, New Jersey has faded from the Anthony sweepstakes, growing disinclined to include rookie Derrick Favors in a trade, a league source told ESPN.com's J.A. Adande.

There were no concrete indications regarding whether the Nuggets were inclined to deal Anthony prior to the opening of the regular season next week. But the rekindling of trade talks two weeks ago coincided with the Nuggets' hiring of salary-cap specialist Pete D'Alessandro.

The Knicks have had their sights on Anthony since losing out over the summer in their free-agent pursuit of LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. They remain determined to add a second max-salary player to their roster to play alongside Amare Stoudemire, who scored 39 points Tuesday night in a victory over New Jersey to overtake Anthony for the league lead in preseason scoring. Stoudemire is averaging 26.0 points per game to Anthony's 23.5.

The Knicks would have to part with an additional asset or two to acquire a first-round draft pick to include in any deal with the Nuggets, and one New York player who has increased his value in recent days is backup point guard Toney Douglas, who had 24 points Tuesday against New Jersey after scoring 23 two nights earlier against Washington.

Gallinari and Randolph have both struggled in the preseason. Gallinari followed up his 0-for-7 performance against the Wizards with a 3-for-7 night against the Nets, while Randolph, averaging 11.0 points and 3.8 rebounds in six preseason games, scored 13 points but did not grab a single rebound. Curry, whose $11.3 million salary comes off the cap at the end of this season, has been sidelined for all six exhibition games with a strained right hamstring.

I don't know why these cats don't play hardball with the Nuggets. He isn't going to resign with the Nuggets and they know this. He also wants to go to NYC. I know there is pressure for Walsh to get him, but I am hoping he doesn't give away too much talent when the Nuggets are the ones who are desperate.

They're blind to see the hopes the team is giving knowing they won't get this man even after having help from other teams...

Knicks Management trading half their team way =

Do they think they'll be like MIA and sign decent players for cheap? Shit could turn into an epic fail if they trade for him and don't do shit...

And now I will sit back as the Knicks fans flock in here with that false hope they've had for so many years, hoping for a consolation prize after missing out on LeBron...:smh:

Nigga,I wish YOU worked for the Knicks front office....sheeeeeeesss

Gallarinari can go but i wouldnt want to give up Anthony Randolph

Yeah. Randolph looks like he could special and I wouldn't give up Douglas either. He looks like he could be a solid player as a small two guard.

Chandler, Danillo, Curry, Mason and Walker could go

Doesn't matter who they trade.

As long as they have a decent PG to distribute the ball, we're good.

Fixed...Knicks have some decent talent but just seems like bad coaching and management is dragging this franchise down...

I would keep Chandler too

I wouldn't worry. The Knicks are heading in the right direction after years of futility. I do think that eventually they need to get rid of D'antoni because his system doesn't translate into championship winning basketball, and I do believe that his success in Phoenix was attributed primarily to the acquisition of Steve Nash. The problem is that very few point guards can do what he does in any basketball generation. Deron Williams is perhaps the only other point guard who can do what he does.

People are still harboring onto the anxiety that is attributed to the Thomas, Checketts, Grunfeld, and Layden administrations. Damn... That is almost twenty years. Anyhow... Walsh seems to be level headed and not the type to try to hit the long ball and slowly build a team. Let's hope that ownership isn't putting pressure on him because they are part of the problem.

Great point but realisticlly who do we have. i think everyone on our roster can be let go.

been saying this from jump.

This has nothing do with the Knicks making progress.

This is Melo having all the power.

He wants to be a Knick. Any team that comes calling and tries to get him. All he has to do to kill the deal is not sign the extension.

So Melo knows Denver can't threaten him by holding out the extension. They need it to get some thing for Melo.

This is KG in 2007 summer all over again. KG rejected team after team. Hell he rejected Boston. They had to get ray allen before he agree on signing an extension with them.

Melo has all the power and leverage and you will be fool to think he will not use it to land on the Knicks.

if he's trying to win he should go to chicago, but i think he's trying to be a bigger superstar. not to mention his wife seems like the type to be nagging him and shit to go to NYC.

Nah man.... We have some young talent. These guys may not become stars but they will be very serviceable on a team and it is really those type of guys who will get you over the hump once you are able to acquire the franchise players.

The last thing we want to do is to gut the team for Melo, and even though he is a great player, I just don't feel he or Amare have the leadership skills to bring a NBA team to the finals. Plus Amare plays too pretty. He need to get on the boards and play better defense, but D'antoni doesn't demand it.

Not going to happen. Chicago just re-upped Noah.

Ya @ 1st I thought it was foolish of him to make it publicly known he wanted to play in NYC...but I see why he did it now...no team is gonna really trade for him just to rent him for 1 year and then gain nothing after he leaves...no sense in Denver holding out for 1 year just to get nothing for him when he leaves...a trade to NY is looking inevitable

Melo doesn't seem like the brightest guy, and he gets nervous because he wants security. He signed the five year deal because of that and now he is needs to get out of Denver before the end of the season because of the collective bargaining agreement. Players are expecting the salaries to go down. Of course, I doubt ticket prices will go down, but that is another story. Melo wants that extension, and he may buckle.

i dont wanna give up danilo but he kinda has to go, he is a sf and he's not quick enough to move to sg...chandler will be a FA so basically its move him now or lose him for nothing....walker is a FA too and really had no future on the team...i don't wanna lose douglass tho he can ball....melo is adding pressure b/c he said he could resign with den so basically he's saying trade for me now... he doesn't seem willingly to wait until he's a FA...knicks need to make a push for fernandez from portland his shooting can replace Danilo's and he's a sg and still extremely young...knicks have announced the Russian is gonna be the starting center so we'll get rebounds and blocks from the center position it also helps that he matches Howard in terms of strength so he won't get pushed around, with him we got inside toughness and Amar'e has looked unguardable in the preseason...add melo and we're dangerous, my concern is the sg spot...roger mason would be the starter by default until buki is healthy or fields might take it....we may have to move randolph if Mozgov proves he can be a starter at center...randolph for mayo maybe?

see it's all part of the plan.

CP3 could have done the same thing but he has two years so the Hornets have the leverage. Similar to when PHX traded Kidd to New Jersey when he wanted the Spurs.

CP3 won't have any leverage till next year when he can force himself to the Knicks.

The owners are not digging this at all.:lol: which why they are rushing to get this new CBA out.

The Nuggets are just fucked.

Cause Melo can really be an asshole and come trade deadline and when every team is making bid. Melo could tell the Knicks.

"Give them the shittest offer you can that has the contracts matching up."

Eddy Curry Chandler and Walker 2025 draft pick is the offer on the table.

The Nuggets could have the Nets on the line saying they have

Favors Devin and Terrence Williams on the table

but that doesn't mean shit if Melo doesn't sign that extension.:lol:

That means the Knicks could keep Randolph Galleo.

Which why I expect Melo to be moved after Dec 15. Denver waits till the trade deadline they really are going to get fuck

Where did any of you read that he would only re-sign if traded to the Knicks? His camp already agreed on the list of like 5 teams. He's not forcing a trade to specifically the Knicks, he's forcing a trade to one of the teams on that list. I swear thats what I love/hate about NY in general, if it involves "us" then we assume its all about US....

I am sorry that you aren't in the know. Just kidding. All the other teams have backed out,and basically he listed those teams so as to not seem as if he is requesting only the Knicks. i think there may be something against a player trying to force his way onto a particular team. I am not sure so don't trust it. There have been teams who have tried to make deals,a nd he refused them all. So, basically he is saying the Knicks. The other teams that he listed have stopped the trade talks, and the Kncks are the only ones involved. We will see what transpires.

two weeks ago.

When the so called four team deal died.

they was actually two deals that fizzle out.

the first deal was

Nothing is imminent in the next 24 hours, but Denver and New Jersey are having ongoing discussions centered on No. 3 overall pick Derrick Favors and future first-round picks going back to the Nuggets. The proposed trade also would involve the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Bobcats. Under the proposal, league sources said the Nets would also send point guard Devin Harris to the Bobcats, who would move forward Boris Diaw to the Jazz, who send forward Andrei Kirilenko to the Nuggets to complete what one front-office source described as a “very complicated” deal.

the second deal was

According to NorthJersey.com, the New Jersey Nets are still trying to get their hands on Carmelo Anthony.

They are reporting that league sources told them about a possible deal that would have sent Chris Paul to Portland, Devin Harris, Kris Humphries and other Blazers to the Hornets; while Derrick Favors would go to Denver and Anthony and Andre Miller to the Nets, league sources said.

However, Favors' preseason struggles, hasn't exactly boosted his trade value.

then it was leaked that Houston was no longer a player.

Clippers do not want to give up Blake.

As with Chi with Noah.

So now you have two teams. Nets and the Knicks

and come on I'm a die hard Nets fan but Melo has all the power and Wesley his agent has been trying to convince Melo on New Jersey.

His heart is with the Knicks.

It is inevitable

david lee looks like shit, can't believe the warriors let randolph go for the "opportunity" to overpay for him :smh:

Everyone in NYC knew Lee was overrated. He put up great numbers on a bad team. He can't play defense. His offense has gotten better, but he is more of a role player. Also, that D'antoni offense will inflate a player's numbers.

It's the pre-season so don't put to much into. New team, new system can be a difficult adjustment. Lee's going to give you a guaranteed 18-10 a night and play his heart out.

the new coach of the warriors is making a push towards making the team more defensive... lee doesn't play defense he's gonna suck
