Sony has announced that it will be the first to capture FIFA's World Cup finals using 3D cameras. Depending on the tournament results, up to 25 of the matches will be recorded in the new 3D format using Sony's new "pro-level" cameras. Sony hasn't announced how soon the 3D footage would be made public or in what formats, though they have confirmed a 3D push for the PS3 in 2010.

It is also not known whether the recorded 3D video will require the use of 3D glasses, or whether it will be made for the new 3D TVs that are said to be releasing as early as next year. Such TVs don't require the use of glasses in order to achieve a 3D effect.

In any case, it seems that Sony was deadly serious about 3D becoming a major part of their future strategy, which they mentioned in their earnings report a few weeks ago.
