US could be vulnerable to the same kind of drone swarm attack Ukraine unleashed on Russia’s bomber fleet?

Ukraine’s shock drone strike on Russia’s strategic bomber fleet this week has generals and analysts taking a new look at threats to high-value United States aircraft at bases in the homeland and abroad – and the situation is worrisome.
“It’s an eyebrow-raising moment,” Gen. David Allvin, the US Air Force chief of staff, said at a defense conference in Washington on Tuesday, adding that the US is vulnerable to similar attacks.
“There is no sanctuary even in the US homeland – particularly given that our bases back home are essentially completely unhardened,” Thomas Shugart, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), told CNN.

Imagine this: Hundreds of small drones equipped with explosives swarm power stations in Chicago, water systems in Atlanta, and data centers across Silicon Valley — all within minutes. These aren’t armed Predator drones. These are consumer-grade quadcopters, enhanced with 3D-printed parts, guided by GPS jamming-resistant tech, and launched from innocuous vans, rooftops, or even speedboats just off the coast.
They fly low, fast, and under radar. They don’t need pilots. And they can’t be stopped by systems designed for planes or missiles.
What makes this threat even more dangerous is its simplicity.
The tools to execute such an attack are widely available, and the knowledge to weaponize them is no longer confined to classified military handbooks. On forums and encrypted channels, extremists and rogue actors have already begun experimenting with swarming tactics and payload delivery systems. We've seen the prototypes in action overseas. It's only a matter of time before someone attempts it here.
Sad to say, it will happen.
