I'm looking for advice on developing software in the financial services industry. I know i need some basic info on the markets but things like programming languages, platforms, or any little nuggets that software devs use in this industry. I know C/C++ but I'm switching to C# and .Net cause shit is way easier to develop for.

Thanks

Well you need to include some more information. What specific area of the financial services industry are you trying to develop software for? Often times in such industries there are certain certifications that software must have (eg. Credit Card Processing - CISP and PCI certs, etc.) before it can even be considered an option. Do you have any industry contacts? Let's say you have a finished product tomorrow, how do you plan getting your product in front the chief decision makers of a business? Most businesses are going to want some type of support options. If you are the sole developer and proprietor its going to be a hard sell. Your choice of programming language is of little relevance as it is just up to you far as what you are the most comfortable with.

I work on Wall Street as web application developer for a financial firm for 4 years now. In all that time the dominant language has always been Java/J2EE. However their are apps built in C/C# ... infact the prior company I worked for only did it in C, C++. As SC Brova said it really doesn't matter so much what you make it in if you are trying to sell it. I would recommend it being robust and easily plugable. In other words it should be very easy to incorporate it into an existing infrastructure.

All that said I have rarely seen a company use any vendor that did not have a strong backing behind it, wether it be open source or propietary.
