Symptom not the problem & the false solution...We have been living with this type of gun violence for over half a century in our community. There are many reasons for the violence but it all comes down to the "might makes right" ethos of an unjust society trickling down to the neighborhood.
I remember being a kid in south central walking with friends through the neighborhood and we heard something that sounded like gunfire (firecrackers or car back firing). We automatically dive to the pavement. We'd get up laugh about it after threat assessment and keep pushing. Didn't realize the kind of daily traumas that had us trained to respond like that. Poverty & inequality, no justice or fairness, no employment, but plenty of War; War on drugs, war on welfare, war on public schools & plenty of militarism internationally.
