I hope I was not brash in my assessment of how people view members of Omega Psi Phi. To be fair my pops is one and my mom is Delta Sigma Theta but I had little interest in joining. But pops was on that same shit your pops said. He was like "you can whatever frat you want", but don't come around my house with that Black/Gold, Red/White, and Blue/White shit. He was on some straight Warriors shit like when the Orphans asked them to drop their flags.

Life choices fam when you are young and dumb. I was either going to be a que or gdi. I knew this at a very early age. That TAX shit had a couple of lines that I knew of and most were cast offs from other Fraternity lines. They were as sad as you could imagine lol.

The bad part is that there is an intake process so technically there is nothing stopping anyone from being a part of any fraternity or sorority of their choice. However intakes are not well received on the yards by those who choose to do a traditional line for universal respect no matter which yard or which old school style traditionalist. Personally I think the intake process really forced frats and soros to go underground even more.

I am all for people not being discouraged because of an over abusive big brothers or big sisters who personally take issues with pledges and make their line life hell so he or she would quit. The sad truth is that a lot of good brothers and sisters did not make it because of personal agendas against them (and some of these are would be legacies). So what the legacies are forced to do is to just go grad chapter. Infact I know a lot of people(especially legacies) who just waited for grad chapter because line life on campus is no joke especially at an HCBU.

I am not in no Pan Hellenic council so I can't speak on what the 8 historically black ones do in practice. But I would like to see lines made public again but the old heads have to lay off the extreme heavy handed physical and verbal abuse. I mean I seen cats get stomped out in public at college functions by big brothers while the rest are heading for the hills with my own eyes.

People I know who pledged and crossed over always said their worst experience is getting isolated and kidnapped by heads on older lines or current ones who bring in the heads from older lines or when lines from other schools come for like football and basketball games or events every last one said they knew an asswhoopin was coming.

You make some excellent points. Just on my observations there are too many cats that lack mental toughness. Pledging had more to do with mental fatigue. There are some physicality but the night after night grind of pledging is the worse. Not seeing your girlfriend, not eating right, running every where, learning masses amount of info, existing in a single room with your musty ass lbs, and step practice is a mental beating.

It takes focus and toughness. I don't know if it is because of being single parent raised. Or they just have too much of everything without the need to earn it. Or I am just getting old and jaded but new ninjas are not built for overcoming adversity of any kind. I teach millennials and I am still very active in the frat and these young dudes are different than I was at that age.

Of course there are; I neither said nor implied there aren't. Just stated facts that may have influenced his decision.

When I pledged Alpha many years ago at the University of Texas at Austin, I remember seeing examples of men who became mentors who influenced MY decision. I don't know the young man, maybe you do. I won't presume to know what had to do with his decision, but I do know that the Alphas are very well represented in Houston and maybe he saw that and then again, maybe he didn't.

I gave a kid an assignment that takes about 2 weeks to complete and at week 3 he is trying to show me some personal sketches. I am like dude you are about to get fired, fuck your sketches. The problem is, it is more work to get rid of him then to hire him. Documenting incompetence is a job all by itself and don't even talk about the victim card he will play after the process begins.
