I know you all will clown me, but I did it more for the experience than anything else. I had a 3G and was eligible for an upgrade. When I'm here in the US (chicago) for school I need a phone thats fun and low maintenance. Obviously if I were back home in Japan, the iPhone wouldn't even be on my radar since we have a plethora of awesome mobiles to choose from. However, I honestly do like the iPhone, I'm not a tech person, and for some reason the 4th Gen intrigued me. I get them mainly for the apps.
I reserved it on Apple's website since I couldn't pre-order and they said show up at 7am to pick it up. I chose the Apple store in a relatively well-known mall in the Chicago suburbs to get it from. Debated on going at 5am and sleeping in the car, but figured I would go at 8 and the lines wouldn't be THAT bad.
BOY WAS I WRONG!! The line was all the way in the back of the mall (and the Apple store is located near the front). I got there at 8:15am, didn't leave with phone in hand till 12:45-1pm. It was a fun experience because I got to people watch, meet new people while in line, watch stupid high schoolers clown and try and cut in line, etc. I've never waited in line for ANY product so this was a first for me.
What baffles me though is why for Apple's iphone? Clearly the Droid X and EVO are amazing phones as well but why does the iPhone, and Apple products in general carry sooooo much hype that will make people wait in the hot sun in 95 degree weather for them?? A woman about three people ahead of me had a baby with her that was clearly dehydrated and agitated from the sun beaming down on her. Her friend suggested they leave and come back and the woman opposed her saying, "She (the baby) can wait till I get my phone. She'll be fine"
People were skipping class, work, important engagements, etc all to stand in line! It was mind-boggling. Granted I was there too, but I didnt have shit to do today. Had I any important appointments, work, etc I would definitely not skip to wait to get a phone.
So yeah, that's my tale. I have the phone now, I like it but I haven't put anything on it. I'm contemplating jailbreaking it since my 3G was jailbroken for 2 years and I loved it. We shall see.
