Gabrielle Union is a self-made woman and very successful in her chosen profession. But her husband is millionaire athlete Dwyane Wade, so some people think that this is a bonanza for her economically. Despite being able to use her looks to attract wealthy men, Gabrielle surprised a lot of onlookers by choosing to get a prenup even though she didn’t need one.
In fact, she says that she demanded the paperwork before the two were wed last year. When asked why she made the decision to protect her wealth and her relationship, Gabby gave this interesting answer.
“For women in Hollywood, when they’re coupling, everything is about the brand. Everything is about latching on to a rising star, so you can kick your heels up. That’s never been my story, ever,” she told Yahoo Style. “I make sure to let people know all of the hard work that’s gone into my career.”
The 42-year old Union met Wade in 2007 and says she was still trying to pay her student loans. She says that as a result of her economic struggles, she always works to live beneath her means and think about her financial future. She also isn’t in the business of waiting for a man to save her, which has been a winning strategy for her up until this point.
“Now that it’s time to get married to a man who happens to play basketball and has done well for himself, I want to make it clear that I have in no way hitched my wagon to his star,” she said. “I have my own wagon and star.”
